Dublin''s monthly BikeBop critical mass cycle continues this evening, Friday, July 31st, at 6pm and takes around an hour.. Unlike critical mass cycles decades ago, which were seen as more adversarial, it is described as a "fun 1hr cycle calling for better and safer cycling infrastructure." It's a casual affair and a great way to start a Friday night with music pumping from speakers on cargo bikes which take part in the cycle. Organised by campaign group I Bike Dublin, the cycle kicks off as usual from Parnell Square North.

A great example of why the "make eye contact with drivers and wear reflective clothing" advice for pedestrians and cyclists is bad. Nothing short of physically limiting where and how drivers can operate their vehicles will work.

There is this passive aggressive thing that drivers do that when you push back against it in even the mildest way, it gets you labelled aggressive and I find it kind of dishonest to be frank. Here's an example.

A driver nearly knocked me down in 2022 whilst my bike was like this. He claimed to not have seen me. We really are governed by the most inept bed wetters our country has ever known.
I’ve emailed @duncansmithtd.bsky.social on this as my local TD who has already acknowledged his concerns with this proposal too. I’d urge everyone to contact their local TDs on this matter.
As a cyclist, I have absolutely no problem obeying any law so long as it is based on reason and facts. Bringing in reg plates, mandatory hiviz and helmets is not backed by any study to make cycling safe. It’s a reactionary policy by someone who is either too stupid to know that it or doesn’t care.
And here we are threatening to ban e-scooters.

As of June 1, nearly every new car cleared for import has to be electric. the most aggressive EV mandate on the planet right now, and it has almost nothing to do with consumer demand.

Two-way cycling is now allowed on the north bank of the Grand Canal between La Touche Bridge at Richmond St/Rathmines Road and Harold's Cross Bridge in Dublin. Althought, the Portobello Plaza is still under construction, so for now a longer detour will be needed at one end. The otherwise one-way street, Windsor Terrace, has been marked by Dublin City Council to allow two-way cycling without any cycle lane or separated space.

Years ago, Peter McVerry noted to me the godsend e-scooters were to people trying to climb out of poverty. They were an accessible way to get to jobs that previously were out of their reach because they'd have to show up at ~4am. The class dynamics of government's response shouldn't be missed.

I BIKE Dublin@ibikedublin.bsky.social · 3w agoThe removal of cars from Parliament Street and Capel Street, while very welcome, has exposed the dearth of safe cycling routes across the river Liffey. Grattan Bridge is only the second bridge (after the Beckett) to have fully segregated two-way cycle routes.
Micheál Martin says he's "leaning towards" banning e-scooters because of rising injuries and the misuse of e-scooters and scramblers by criminal gangs. But those are two completely different problems. One is public health. The other is criminality.
