"It's the same agreement that was nearly agreed to last time and the seventeen times before that." "Exactly! And that is precisely what the Ayatollahs are expecting us to nearly agree to! We shall catch them completely off guard! Baaaaaah!"
Yeah, so many things now leave subtext by the wayside because they assume viewers will be looking at their phone and missing it anyway. Incidentally, I'm still convinced the Deadpool & Wolverine Honda Odyssey fight is using Hays Code-style subtext to imply sex, but hardly anybody picked up on it.
Cleaned up and updated version of my new map from yesterday, inspired by reading Rachel Kousser's ALEXANDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD; the premise is that Alexander III doesn't die in 323 BCE and then things get out of hand.
He figures he's just to lay it out for him. No beating around the bush. "Hi, David... the owner of the warehouse is here. He just wanted to check in with you and make sure that, uh... that we're not shooting porn." Without missing a beat, Lynch barks, "NOT YET, WE'RE NOT." L e g e n d. (10/10)
I do not think this is causal, but it seems at least notable that the last two major reading trends on social media were: 1. The Booktok romantasy boom, a full blown multi billion dollar book-girlie ecosystem 2. “Performative males” where you take pictures of men reading in public to shame them
I think this take is a little trolly but (1) it’s true that men don’t read much fiction very much and that is Bad, and (2a) go to Barnes and Noble and look at the covers of the books in the SFF section and see how many appear targeted to me or (2b) try to find the “Adventure” section
Excuse me?
I’m reading a book published in 1944 and this logo is so unbelievably tough. I’d absolutely wear a shirt with this exact design.
Will Ferrell and Ryan Gosling. Gosling is the fervent believer, Ferrell the horny dude with doubts.
In one plotline you have the courtroom side of enforcement, where defence lawyers are arguing that oral sex doesn’t count.
It’s actually a rare romcom that *should* be an anthology movie.
If you do not have a gag in which in a courtroom scene, someone argues that oral doesn’t count because of “the Clinton precedent”, you are too ashamed of sex to be making this romcom.
Eternity was one of the most delightful surprises in cinema I had last year. I watched it and the next day dragged a friend to see it with me again. If you are at all interested in speculative fiction and world-building I genuinely believe that movie to be required reading
I go on about Eternity - a delightful, funny and heartwarming romcom - but that movie mines so many jokes out of “wait, everyone gets to choose their own afterlife? Even, you know, Nazis?” in script and set dressing.
Every interview Gluck gives he seems to be ashamed and bored by the premise of his own movie.
‘ONE NIGHT ONLY’ director Will Gluck says they cut out “so much nudity” from the film because he thinks audiences dislike sex on screen. “Whenever people now see nudity or very adult situations in a big theater, they get uncomfortable.” (Source: variety.com/2026/film/fe...)
a big part of carbrain is the delusion that your car is a private space akin to the home, and not a heavy machine that one operates fully in public
Average Saudi Patriot Battery when it detects a Shahed
BRUH??? "Saudi Arabia used about 86% of its 2,800 PAC-3 interceptors in the first 38 days of combat, leaving it with 400 missiles left in April. Other Gulf nations used up similar amounts of their inventories, CSIS said." www.reuters.com/world/what-i...
In the YouTube comments for the Primetime trailer, the only person who’s noticed that the movie does not seem pro TCAP thinks that’s bc Hollywood is run by paedophiles and that’s why Sound of Freedom wasn’t a major studio release Everyone else thinks it’s a marvel movie but for Chris Hansen
You may be able to GET ELECTED by saying "The 1% have stolen the American Dream from you." But what happens next? You literally can't solve the problem by imposing on the 1% and no one else. You're going to have to renege on your promises; you might well get eaten by the very same beast you fed.
One of the advantages of speed cameras is that they provide enforcement without actually needing police to be involved. Unless by "police state" you just mean "state in which there are consequences for breaking the law".
Part of the genius of “Eternity” is that it really felt like Freyne had thought a lot about the imagined world in order to get as many gags from the premise as possible. And my red flag re: the Purge romcom is that Will Gluck does not appear to have done so:

“That's 40 *cents*. Cents are a form of currency one hundred times smaller than the reál. I'm not even going to take this. Come back when you have 130 reál.” Isn't it... evil? The order of magnitude between what is asked of a person -- and what they have?
that current affairs article is what people are talking about when they say that there's a kind of left wing commentary that's essentially attempting literary analysis on real life
Enjoyed this Esquire feature on the Churchwell brothers. IMO, they are among the last elegantly dressed men in the United States. Notably, neither are "fashion influencers." They are both distinguished cardiologists with great taste and a lifetime relationship with the same tailor.
Damn me, but all things are queer, come to think of ’em.
Beginning to feel like I need to budget a week on the blog for a military primer on 'how the US Navy is the load-bearing pillar of your ability to eat bananas and of folks in developing countries to eat at all.' Not saying that is an optimal situation, merely that it is the situation.
