Productivity doesn't matter if you're working on the wrong thing.
We shouldn't try to use AI for everything. We should try to build everything so you don't need AI to use it.
I worked on a few fairly prominent efforts in open source (Istio, OpenAPI), but I think of all of them, it’s gRPC that I think has the coolest story. Pull up a chair and set for a spell (any inaccuracies in what follows are 100% my fault for having a bad memory!).
Related #golang PSA: Gophers often mistakenly put a -u in 'go get -u foo', when they would have been better off with just 'go get foo'. 'go get foo' says to upgrade foo itself. It's shorthand for 'go get foo@upgrade' 'go get -u foo' says to *also* upgrade all the direct and indirect deps of foo.
PSA: go.sum is not a lockfile. You never need to look at go.sum. go.mod has everything you need.
I can see the prompts now. "Please stop this DDoS attack and recover our customer's stolen data"
If 2025 was the year of vibe coding, 2026 will be the year of vibe maintenance and security.
Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software. Just fuck you. Fuck you all. I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

The three biggest miracles in the world are: creation of earth, evolution and people becoming AI experts in just a few months.
A reminder for #golang folks joining Bluesky - here's a starter pack of contributors to the Go project!
There's the term "Enshittification:" products decay over time. Almost always to allow companies to make more money (e.g. via ads etc.) We need a term for "AI enshittification." Where AI functionality is added: that degrades the product experience. Except the company now makes LESS money on it!!
Siemens recently launched a blog about bitcoin, here is one blog post from it: blog.siemens.com/2025/01/bitc... Am I the only one who finds it mildly disturbing that a company who is a key player in the energy sector claims things like "Bitcoin is energy"?

Just like in the 2010’s software dematerialized consumer goods, in the 2020’s software is dematerializing the energy value-chain. The way this…

From an email: "Do you know of any teams that have had positive experiences with offshore teams - where directors and eng managers were in the US, and devs in another country? Why and how did these teams work so well together?" My take: this (almost always) will not work. Everyone learns...

AI company: we trained this dog to talk. It doesn’t actually understand language, but it kinda sounds like it’s having a conversation by mimicking the sound of human speech. CEO: awesome, I’ve fired my entire staff, how quickly can it start diagnosing medical disorders
Everything good that happened in my writing career happened because someone, normally another writer, helped me. Suggested me for something, put in a good word, and so on. The idea was always that you help others and they help others in their turn. It's not a win or lose game.
