The NZ Government spent $8M to bring the Michelin Guide here. $8M is the entire yearly government funding to all food banks, who feed 500k people a month. newsroom.co.nz/2026/07/17/s... #NZPol
Starry-eyed Tourism NZ buried the downside to fund its $8m Michelin gamble
Previously secret documents imply that the famous international restaurant guide essentially guaranteed the award of at least one star to a restaurant, if the NZ Government paid its $1,901,250 fee.

Not a good time to be a circular sawfish.
Two years ago, I covered the story of Critically Endangered sawfish mysteriously swimming around in circles until they die. Today at the American Elasmobranch Society meeting, there’s a whole symposium about this topic. www.southernfriedscience.com/critically-e...
#NZpol Just went to a screening at Drifter Coffee in Ōrewa of A Line in the Sandstone by Climate Liberation Aotearoa. I may not ever see such a place but it is beautiful & treasured by me & by more of us than not. Bathurst mining sux along with their best mate enabler ANZ Bank and Shame Jones.
🎥 💦 🐌 Check out the teaser for our new film ‘A Line In The Sandstone’ & support the crowdfunder. A massive thank you to everyone who's contributed so far to help make this happen. We're almost halfway with raising enough funds to complete the film & hold screenings chuffed.org/project/alin...
Yep, they dun goofed. www.rnz.co.nz/news/weather...
Weather live: Flights cancelled, trees downed and roofs damaged by strong winds around country
At least 100 flights have been cancelled as heavy winds cut power, damage roofs and prompt emergency callouts around the country.

The wind warning from the NZ weather service is only orange, not red, because gusts are “only” up to 130km/hr I think they dun goofed on this one and it’ll be bad tomorrow though
I think tomorrow at midday the Cook Strait will be the windiest place on earth (100km/hr sustained). Took a look on Nullschool and can’t anywhere with faster wind than this🤔 Just another day in Wellington 🌬️
I know it's not intended to be harmful, but I don't think that "compare how much tax you pay under each parties policies" site is a good thing. It kind of inherently reinforces the framing that "less tax = good" rather than focusing on what's actually being done with the tax take.
I almost missed this one — it sat buried in my library for months while I worked through everything else from this year's trips. It's from my home ground. Rhythm of the Ridges - Tukituki Valley, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand #photography #landscape #nz
It looks as if the Strait was never really closed, but that's just because it's a really bad graph. Zero is basically touching the bottom of the wiggles. The bottom of the shaded area is like minus 10 ships per day! That's not how area graphs are supposed to work.

HTTP gave us hypertext, atproto gives us "social hypertext"
Needless to say, this is all very resonant with our work at @cosmik.network @semble.so - we’re passionate about developing hypertext systems that scaffold sensemaking and transformative learning journeys for individual and collectives. Excited to work on bridging theory and practice!
Just came across @semble.so and am very excited! It’s like a way of having personal knowledge bases (think Notion/Obsidian) that are connected into a broader social network. So curative action - classification, collation - can shift from individual to a collective/social sense-making.
the community knowledge garden has long tables, not tall fences ;) come plant some seeds, harvest some produce, till the soil, or simply sit back and watch the bees pollinate. Our collective attention is an ecological system, let's tend to it that way 🐝🌼🌱🍄🍃
If you ever wondered what's happened to the Manus Island refugees that Australia abandoned in Papua New Guinea... They're dying. Hatam is only 36 years old. He was approved for a medevac to Australia in 2018 but Morrison's government quickly repealed the legislation. refugeeaction.org.au?p=16888

Hey it's me! 😁 This is such a great tool for professionals. I love all the different ATProto integrations in Sifa and how smooth it is to use! If you don't have a Sifa profile yet, you should definitely claim yours 👀

Working in town today and popping in on a special friend
The campaigners who say “ban it all” and the contractors who say “it’s basically empty down there” are both flattening a story that refuses to be flat. That refusal is exactly why this review paper is worth reading. www.franciscoblaha.info/blog/2026/6/...

David Fucking Seymour. “He said as a result of the strikes, Iranian girls will have an opportunity to "dress as you like, go to school, do things that are normal rights that have been withheld from them by this regime" The 120 school kids killed by US bombs in Feb might feel differently. #NZPol

Also I’m scheming to buy a specific building in Wellington on Taranaki Street to do exactly this. Long communal tables in a big hall with extremely cheap delicious food. Though. Though $23 is way too much, aiming for $15.

MIGRANTS! Important! For electoral purposes, you are a resident if you’re in New Zealand legally and not required to leave within a specific time, and have lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more. This will be a lot more people than are aware of this. enrol.vote.nz/app/enrol/#/...

I may have just bought a giant 3-tier brewing system as I can't resist a bargain. I have no idea what I'm doing... anyone want to help me spurge my grist into wort? (I have no idea what that means 😂). Plan is to make it available to anyone nice. Just need somewhere in Wellington for it to live!

Interesting article on how vaccines might prevent dementia. It’s fun when new scientific techniques are able to sort of upend some of our ideas about how immunity works.

I'm seeing a lot of hurt and fear from my trans friends on here, so let me just say: @distributeaid.org and I have your back. We're not afraid to materially support trans folks, especially in the south where most of our work happens.
