Computers are not some unknowable force of nature or entity. They're products and extremely knowable. Treating them as this mystical new form of life is not just illiterate, it's a great way to normalize this attitude of not being able to hold the people who made them accountable for their actions.

Every time outlets publish the chat logs of people who committed violence or suicide after talking to AI I am, like, so consumed with rage and disgust I feel physically sick. The people making these things should never get a good night's sleep again in their lives

A few years ago I went to a pig sanctuary and most of the pigs were stoned from eating green acorns. This one, Wilbur, couldn’t stand up and was too big to lift, so the staff had to leave him in this bush and wait for him to sober up.

Working on a piece for the newsletter, this is a data point - smart people keep shrugging and saying “communities don’t like data centers because of ‘vibes’” etc when it’s really that people are in fact smart enough to know they are bad faith neighbors. It is *entirely rational* not to trust them.

it’s awesome that outlook isn’t smart enough to remove mailto: when you paste an email into the to field. even better when you copy the address from a different to/from field in outlook and it copies as mailto.
