A small announcement before we continue yelling about books:

Bonedust Press is a publisher, which means we need to sell books to survive as a business, but that is nothing compared to the people around the world, including in our own communities, trying to simply survive through genocide, war, natural disasters, and hateful bigotry.

We cannot ignore our need to balance these two truths.

Bonedust Press commits to donating 10% of all direct sales to mutual aid on a continuing basis. Every month, we will donate to a specific cause and we will continue to do so for as long as we are able.

Just to be perfectly clear: we support freedom and independence for Gaza, Lebanon, Iran and every place being bombarded or threatened. We see Sudan and we grieve and wish for peace. We support our trans and queer siblings and their freedom. We do not tolerate hateful bigotry. We are just a small indie publisher, but we are built by human hands. We are Black, queer, and angry. Our heart hurts for the people in pain, and we’ll do what we can with what we have.

i'm not doing the likes thing with this but sometimes it's good to have a framework for talking about other stuff you like, especially if you have to be Online to Promote Things so that People Buy Your Books (Neon Hemlock authors and anyone else besides are well to quote and do this too of course)

book asks:
1. book you've reread the most times?
2. top 5 books of all time?
3. what is your favourite genre?
4. what sections of a bookstore do you browse?
5. where do you buy books?
6. what books have you read in the last month?
7. is there a series/book that got you into reading?
8. what is the first book you remember reading yourself?
9. when do you tend to read most?
10. do you have a guilty fav?
11. what non-fiction books do you like if any?
12. did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?
13. do you have a goodreads?
14. do you ever mark/dog ear books you own?
15. recommend and review a book.
16. how many books have you read this year?
17. top 5 children's books?
18. do you like historical books? which time period?
19. most disliked popular books?
20. what are things you look for in a book?

#SumLuv: Day 5 This is a pretty good question. I scoured the fantasy/scifi shelves in my library, and those were, then, pretty limited. I took what I could get, which consisted of lots of 80's epic fantasy, because translations at the time took a while. They often had a kind of romance in them 1/3

Do you remember the first romance novel you read? Where did you get it from? 🧡 #SumLuv 🧡

Romance Writers Summer of Love #SumLuv @EllieYellu Day 5: Romance Reads. What was your introduction to romantic fiction?

Fae: “Tell us your true name.” Me: “…Just my name? No birthdate, no SSN, no fingerprint scan, no address, no mother’s maiden name? Are you sure you’ve even got the right Olivia Waite? There’s like six.” Fae: “What the hell kind of bargains have you been making?” Me: “They call it health insurance.”

The Fae: so we’re going to take you away from here and— Me: I accept! The Fae: and you won’t remember anything and you will not return for a century— Me: I ACCEPT HARDER

I swear to God, part of the problem of literacy is that we make kids read SO MANY books like this. Of course they’re going to associate reading with misery! We put them in a Skinner box and shock them when they read, what did people THINK would happen?

Nick Harkaway@nickharkaway.com · yesterday

Having ranted about school curriculum books, I’ve just seen my son’s summer reading list, and all I can say is “I was right”. A more depressing collection would be tricky to assemble. Are we actively trying to convey to kids the idea that reading is dismal and arduous?

Bay Area friends: would you consider opening your home to these two cuddly cats? A friend found them behind a gas station. Their sibling, a black cat, got adopted, but it appears no one likes orange cats. They are being kept in a bathroom for the time being and need a home.

A friend of mine found these three kittens behind a Bay Area gas station. They are tame, vaccinated, and incredibly affectionate. Unfortunately, she's unable to keep them and I'm trying to find them a home. They are at risk of going to a shelter. Bay Area people, are you open to adopting?

Three kittens in a cage. Two are orange and one is black.

In The Cruel Gods, there are two gods that are respected above all others. Starting with the Glimmer god, Gildola, and this is because the Glimmer basically rule the Golden City above Chime, which gives them a lot of political and financial power. But the real power is Dor, god of time. #MythAugust

#MythAugust 5 Today is about hierarchy! Who ranks highest or lowest among your gods/spirits/whatever? Is there a consensus about this ranking? As usual, interpret the question as loosely as you need to to fit your specific worldbuilding, and feel free to skip if it's not relevant to you! 😊❤️

#MythAugust prompt for Aug 5:
Let's talk hierarchy! Which of your deities are more powerful/respected? Are there minor deities who serve the big ones?

At the bottom of the image in small text it says "Feel free to yap about a fantasy mythology you already have, or use these prompts to create a new one! Don't forget to interact with others :-)"

My house has never been on fire. I subsidize the fire department for all the people whose houses have been on fire. I do not regret this in the slightest. I don't want to sit and do nothing while other people's homes burn. And if my house DOES catch fire, I'll be damn glad the fire dept exists.

Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
