My favorite hobby is writing sequels for books I foolishly said were standalones 🫣 My favorite part is def getting to spend more time with the characters and exploring more of their story. Least favorite part is battling the insecurity that it won't live up to the first book. Also the marketing.

I've written two sequels (and technically a third which is like a sequel sequel lol) and in some ways they are easier, and in other ways they're harder. Easier because you know the story, world, and characters now. Harder because readers have ~expectations~ that are terrifying to fulfil!

Ive written stories since i was in grade K. During 5/6/7 i started a series called shifters written over the span of about 8 notebooks? It was going to be a trilogy but i only ended up getting about half way through the second book or just beginning the third (its been a very long time). However (1)

Although Fearless in Seir was originally intended to be standalone, I ended up writing The Prodigal Son as its sequel. The Good: - Fleshing out the characters' personalities - Building on the setting to bring life to it The Bad: - Recalling the background of each character to ensure consistency

Currently in the trenches of sequel writing and so far the best bits are: -delving deeper into relationships & world lore! -the satisfaction of closing the loop on character arcs Least favorite: -the persistent fear it won't live up to the first one -BOOK 1 LORE IS CANON NOW, NO TAKE BACKS 😫

The hardest part of sequel writing is that it's not like a singular kind of book It needs to work as a follow-up to Book 1, it needs to work as its own narrative, and it's got to lay the groundwork for the NEXT book or books I like going back to Mokosza but at some fucking cost

my gift for @cometkins.bsky.social for the upcoming release of his highly anticipated sequel, MAGUS! marriage is hard. fighting against the mad church destroying the country and corrupting its angels is hard. but fear not! there's now a fat, hairy, ragebaiting third wheel, and GOD I love him.

Tharaiyelagh learned to help Baleirithys rebuild Seyzharel because nobody else could do it. Akieryon volunteered himself as a decoy for Caspar. And then again later he led a rescue effort because no one else had the combination of knowledge and initiative to do it.
