So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?

“Sure. Sure.

Yes, we know AI is using up resources. So does driving a car or a planes so does building a new home. So do a lot of things. Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along. Suddenly YOUR water might not be clean, so it’s a Big Deal”.

@draft2digital.bsky.social used to be THE place for indie authors working on shared revenue projects like anthologies. This new change entirely breaks that model, and makes it basically untenable.

Ryan Marie Ketterer@ryanmarie47.bsky.social · 4mo ago

@draft2digital.bsky.social has made the inane decision to charge a yearly fee to anyone that make less than $100 per year, indicating that such accounts may be AI slop. This punishes indie publishers in particular, but it especially punishes members of a shared revenue project. (1/5)

Our associate editor Ghazal is looking to leave Tehran as soon as possible, so if anyone knows of an art residency or work opportunity or uni posting that they can apply to, please let us know (dm or email). These are scary times, and we must protect each other as best we can.

Happy to see Avi Lewis was elected leader of Canada's federal NDP party! The active discussion of capitalism as the root of so many of the issues we're having is refreshing. Feeling cautiously optimistic. . .

I started a new garden journal this weekend! Such a time capsule to look back at my last one that started in 2014 when I was still gardening in containers on my tenth floor balcony, to now in my backyard (and every year since!). Still an obsession.

The first page of two journals - one is titled Garden 2014 and the other says 2026 Garden

The rumours are TRUE! There is a Romance x Horror bookstore PopUp in Union station running from now until May 31st. This great little space, shared between us and Hopeless Romantic Books, is the pink/black bookstore of your dreams. Come by say hi on your next commute! 🖤📚👻💕

A sign says “bookstore” above a window, inside the right shelving is all black and the left is all pink. One side of the window says Hopeless Romantic Bookstore, the other sports the Little Ghosts ghost logo on top of a stack of books.

I'm thrilled to join Haven Spec as Poetry Editor! Excited to dig into the beautiful mountain of spec poetry - the vivid, the emotional, the lyrical, the strange, the dark, the climate-conscious, the bittersweet, the idea-driven, the magical, the otherwordly, the weird. . . and everything else!

We're over the moon to announce that Jessica Peter / @jessicapeter.bsky.social has joined us as our new Poetry Editor! Welcome! Welcome Welcome Welcome!

Image shows a snippet from the Haven Spec website of Jessica Peter's bio and image. The text reads as follows:

Jessica Peter writes dark, haunted, and sometimes absurd short stories, novels, and poems. A social worker and health researcher, she lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Her writing can be found in Apparition Literary, The NoSleep Podcast, Flame Tree, and Cosmic Horror Monthly, among other places. She also co-edited Howls from the Scene of the Crime: An Anthology of Crime Horror (Howl Society Press, May 2024). You can find her on Bluesky at @jessicapeter.bsky.social, or at www.jessicapeter.net.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like

Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

Grouchy writer rant: don’t put this in your guidelines if you want me to take you seriously “Simultaneous Submissions: Don’t. This is the fastest way to get on our list.” Especially from a token or nonpaying market. If. You dont want sim subs, fine, but sim subbing writers are not criminals 🙄

We need to teach people the difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. Because the discomfort of the safest people is endangering the most vulnerable, all day every day.
