I hadn’t been camping in a few years and so when I went this last weekend I was shocked at how many satellites I could see while looking at the stars. There was scarcely a moment when a satellite wasn’t visibly scooting across the sky. Depressing that it will get visibly much worse.
Reflect Orbital plan to ruin the night sky by putting thousands of mirrors in orbit. They are not the first to try doing this - thirty years ago the Russians put the first, and so far only, reflective mirror in orbit. 🧪🔭

#TheYearInReform Look, it's very simple. Nothing to see here. Move along. Reform UK is a party - sorry - a company built around British Patriotism and being frank with the public, and it is led by straight-talking anti-elite Nigel Farage.
But it’s “just weather”🙄 This is insane! The only month out of ~1800 to record no rain! In England! A notoriously wet place!
England received only 7% of the long-term average rainfall for July. Southern England, just 1%. Factoid: There has been a weather station in Kew Gardens for 155 years. This July was the first month ever to record 0mm of rain. Tomorrow, London will again hit 30C+ www.theguardian.com/environment/...
"The £2.8m annual cost to the purse of the continued running of Jodrell Bank – amounting, by the way, to about 0.03% of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) budget – figures as little more than spare change. The UKRI, I note, has committed £1.6bn towards AI;"

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
We are in the middle of an extreme drought while Water Companies in England who never build any reservoirs, allow billions of litres of water to leak every day But still they are planning to build 100+ new 'Data Centres' that will use hundreds of millions of litres a day more

If anyone is thinking they might not bother due to others saying it wasn’t this that or the other: Go see it. I really enjoyed it!

I am normally the first to defend civil servants. However, if this reporting is true then there should be mass firings and if at all legally feasible, criminal charges. To butcher a West Wing quote: everyone who did it, everyone who ordered it, and everyone who knew about it.

This will be a very visible retrenchment of the UK for international science and space audiences. Also of note is the UK’s withdrawal of contributions from the Hawai’i and Chile telescopes.
The UK's whole science, research and universities 'strategy' is basically 'drive the country off a cliff'. Not even worth arguing about any more. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
What would I be prepared to do to fight fascism? The perennial question. But not posting on Twitter seems a pretty small ask. Amazed how many people I have admired are still doing it.
There is simply no ambiguity in what Elon Musk is arguing and endorsing here.
