I wanted to shift away from Substack before I posted anymore articles. But, if you are someone looking to post articles online & email them out to a small audience, for free (on both ends), there are really very few user friendly options out there.

I’m still processing this 2 days later. I was sitting in a kayak when this baby beluga decided to play with me. Other whales joined in and you can see what happened next. What isn’t on camera is that one then started pushing me around the river for five-ish minutes. It was an unforgettable moment.

I will say that regardless of whether I end up voting Green I think Morrice would inject some desperately needed change into the party and that is a good thing. And for the not very online, pro-Canada, social democrats frustrated with the NDP, there *might* be some potential here (that’s still tbd)

A wave of progressive populism is defying political gravity (ie big money) and upending primary season in the US. It’s exhilarating to witness. 🧵

I don’t think too much will change with these byelections. But ONDP do have a chance to flip Hamilton East-Stoney Creek back orange again which would be a needed boost for the party. York-Simcoe is unlikely to change but how the PC vote ends up will be a bit telling.

The odds of the Green Party finding, and then actually allowing, a truly talented, game changing, 3rd wave Green candidate were always very low. In the real world having a candidate like Morrice was the best possible outcome for them.

I know very little about Dookeran but Morrice has a higher profile and realistically will probably win this pretty easily. Also, there won’t be any co-leader nonsense so that’s 👍

I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive the NDP and Greens, both federally and provincially, for absolutely dropping the ball and eating shit on housing since the mid-10s. Instead of being *the* champion for co-ops and public housing, they just shoved their thumbs up their ass and said nothing.

This is something a lot of urbanists, especially those that came up in the late 90’s to late 00’s, fall to grasp when it comes to the suburbs. There is a reason people like suburbia and home ownership, and it’s not all bad reasons. This is especially true is they remember cities in the 50s or 60s…

I think the reason that perception exists is because it’s true. And yes, a lot of it is urbanists/transit types being weird and dismissive of the needs of families But I also think it’s because those with the most vested interest, parents or hoping to be parents, just don’t have time for this space

The perception that urbanism ignores kids is interesting. I kind of see it in transit world? But half of cycling BlueSky is Kidical Mass. @lauragmitchell.com and others. YIMBYs talk a lot about housing prices as a barrier to having kids. Single-stair helps family-sized apartments.
