The problem is that as we're seeing with the Strait of Hormuz, "the USA forfeits its global ambitions" does not lead to a new age of peace and sunshine, but to global recession and instability. The Strait of Hormuz is not the only load-bearing instance of US power backstopping modern economies.

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

It's pretty staggering how much of this site cannot grasp the distinction between revealed preferences and true preferences.

I don't think this is necessarily a monocausal thing, but we need to confront that "slop" (talking way more broadly than AI here) is popular because a lot of people like it, not because it's being "shoved down your throat"

Also Charlie Kirk was real to them in a way that Melissa Hortmand, Gabby Giffords, and the victims of every other assassination attempt and mass shooting were not.
