🚨 New paper 🚨 tinyurl.com/6sw833b5 It draws a simple analogy: - Many gov't subsidies are inframarginal (eg EVs, solar) - Some firms use product bundles to capture consumer surplus from (inframarginal) buyers - Could bundled subsidies improve the cost-effectiveness of subsidy programs? A 🧵:

Is anyone interested in forming a session for #ASHEcon on bargaining, managed competition, emergency care billing, congestion, or any similar topics?
I'm John Fallon, a labor economist on the job market. My JMP uncovers something wild: when chiropractors got licensed in the early 1900s, medical boards responded by making it HARDER to become a doctor. Why would competition lead to stricter regulations? 🧵 john-fallon-econ.com (1/9)
I am excited to announce I am on the #EconJobMarket this year! 🎉 My research explores economic barriers for people with disabilities at the intersection of labor, public, and health economics. My #EconJMP examines how reliable transportation transforms outcomes for this population. 🧵1/6
🚨 JOB MARKET PAPER ALERT! 🚨 Why do firms provide different workplace amenities? And how does amenity provision affect labor market inequality? 🧵
🚨 We're excited to launch TN Direct Admissions, the nation's first program to simplify college admissions + financial aid! Our pilot will provide students upfront college admissions offers alongside personalized commitments of financial aid—no applications, no fees, no BS.

Hi #EconSky! I was on the market this past cycle, specifically focused on the DC-Maryland-Virginia area because my fiancé is at the Fed Board (we get married this May). I had a few government offers, all of which ended up being affected by the current civil service cuts.
Remember the "Highlights" that some Elsevier journals require? Dean Karlan and friends developed an amazing way to troll them: haikus!

I had a joke about the Ship of Theseus but it's just not the same anymore
The Netherlands has a $50B trade surplus. If the White House is aiming for zero trade balance, where is my subsidy for stroopwafels?
I’m an (IO) economist. When I give a movie 7/10, it means it was pretty good but I’d prefer a nonlinear story.
I'm an economist, when I give a movie 7/10 it means the movie is well-excuted but unfortunately not enough for a general-interest journal.
My second "good news" post of the day! HUGE sigh of relief here at Brown's Promise. Event his SCOTUS agrees that school districts can use race-neutral policies to advance student diversity. www.cnn.com/2024/12/09/p...
Supreme Court declines to review Boston case and ‘race neutral’ efforts to diversify public schools | CNN Politics
The Supreme Court on Monday declined to decide whether three elite Boston public schools violated the Constitution with a zip-code based admissions policy intended to ensure racial diversity.

if you're applying to phd programs you should probably LinkedIn stalk the profiles of recent graduates from said program, *including* those that do not have academic jobs, to get an idea of not only what the program's placement is, but also what people who go a different path end up doing.
My hot take is that this isn’t a trivial intertemporal budget constraint. It’s an optimal stopping problem: cakes have evolving texture and flavor profiles as they absorb fillings. Also if you’ve spent hours decorating, there’s certainly a flow payoff of “having your cake”
I’m don’t get the saying “have your cake and eat it too.” The whole value of a cake comes from eating it. What would be the point of just having a cake but not consuming? This is just one good compound thing, not some greedy concatenation of two separate items.
It's encouraging to see high-quality institutions bring down the cost of attendance! Too many students take on debt but don't complete degrees. Going to these schools can lower that risk. These tuition guarantees are increasingly common. Do they cost-effectively increase low-income enrollment?
A great development. It also reinforces the point that sticker price and cost of attendance can be very different (particularly for those from low-income families).
