He/Him. Canadian. Born 1990. Video game developer; Technical Animator at Ubisoft Toronto. Sometimes I type things. Opinions are mine. www.jplc.ca ATmosphere handle: @jplc.ca I use Wafrn to connect to Wafrn and the Fediverse via app.wafrn.net/blog/JPLC
Even if your ATProto/ATmosphere account isn't hosted on Blacksky's PDS (mine's on Wafrn's PDS, for example), the fact that this exists is still very cool. Android app seems to work on my end 🙂
Blacksky. Available now on iOS and Android.
another day working at the staff cafeteria at NERV. everyone is gossiping about how downstairs some guy was trying to get his son to fuck his motherwifedaughter or whatever. all i know is that tomorrow is lasagna friday and something huge stepped on all the cows in the area so there's no cheese.
Although I adored Wario Land II as a kid, I never played the others. Decided to tackle them in order on the Switch starting with the origin: Super Mario Land. Just finished Virtual Boy Wario Land (which was pretty good, actually), but I am now blocked; WL2 is the only one missing from the Switch :(
Character portraits in Phantasy Star IV (Genesis/Mega Drive)
Ooo, this is a very clever way of interpreting the design of Majora's Mask on a humanoid face, especially the horns, spikes, and facial markings. Very cool
❝ Let's play good guys against bad guys. Are you ready? You're the bad guy. And when you're bad, you just run. That's fine, 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵? ❞
Video game pet peeve: The narrative says you are trapped or confined to a certain location for some reason, but the game still lets you leave or fast travel to wherever you want. I get the desire to not limit the player's freedom, but I dunno, sometimes I want some limits in my experience?
Sometimes it really hits me (especially as a game dev) that video games are miracles. You're telling me some humans made little digital worlds that I can run around in, sometimes on portable devices that I can hold entirely in my hands? How? Aren't we just hairless apes?? How did we do this???
Kids need/deserve traumatic films. Films that show death or lasting consequences that aren't resolved almost instantly. Fear, anger, grief and frustration should be part of kids movies. Kids arent stupid, they feel big emotions just like adults, they deserve to see those experiences reflected back.
People often scoff at "don't believe in yourself, believe in the me who believes in you" but it's superb advice; when in a depressive state, you can't believe in yourself, but a strategy to get around that is to trust that the people who love you are not lying and they truly see value in you
Gurren Lagann is correct about its central conceit that the entirety of the power of the human spirit is ignited at the intersection of hope, belief, faith & trust. And that despair not only limits imagination but is also a spiritual death that leaves us helpless when facing humanity’s adversaries.

I think I've settled on why I've been on such a long Death Stranding 2 hiatus and why it's been hard to finish it: I think it's ultimately just too similar to DS1 Kojima's previous games, each sequel was trying something that actually felt _new_, even if it was the same genre. DS2 feels like DS1+
For a university writing course, I wrote a fantasy setting where an aspect of it was that there was complete gender equality in that world (the setting wasn't about that specifically, it was just part of the world) My prof (male) said that the equality was bad because it removed conflict and drama
If you see this, please tell me the worst/most baffling bit of creative feedback you've ever recieved. Mine is still the time somebody told me my aliens had names that were too alien. Not that they were unpronounceable, just that they didn't sound enough like human names.
Long ago, the world was nothing more than an endless sea cloaked in a boundless sky, reaching as far as could possibly be imagined. Then two great Titans came into existence. The Bionis and the Mechonis. The Titans were locked in a timeless battle. Until at last, only their lifeless corpses remained
Finally got all caught up on The Amazing Digital Circus and it is truly, to pardon the pun, amazing. Absolutely unique and clever and wonderful and emotional. It's sad to hear about the toxic elements of the fandom bringing the vibe down; TADC is a work that very much deserves to be celebrated
Hot take: I think it would benefit a lot of games to commit to the idea that if things are "urgent" in the narrative, they should also be "urgent" in gameplay terms. If you don't want the player to feel urgency, don't make the narrative urgent
One option isn’t better than the other, it’s all just preference! If you like collecting physical media that’s great. But going back to that won’t solve the bigger problem of corporations having too much power now. We desperately need laws and regulations to catch up to the digital age.
Saying we should all go back to physical media I think misses the point. I actually *like* buying games and movies digitally for a bunch of reasons. What we need is better consumer protections so the things we do buy digitally are actually owned and companies cant delete/revoke access!
