So what happens when the AQI measures over 3500? These numbers are incomprehensible to me.
Smoke has arrived in Seattle, but the other side of the Cascades is absolutely brutal. Wenatchee and other towns (e.g., Plain, Entiat) have been over 1,000 AQI today. Please use air purifiers, N95 masks, and avoid being outdoors if you’re able - there is no safe level of wildfire smoke exposure.
ironically I think the presence of physical media as a thing you keep forever in your home is probably going to be the difference maker here, so much 2010s-era stuff with 1M+ YouTube plays might just vanish into the ether within a generation
Update: I asked SPD about KUOW's claim that they said Barnes' travel was no different than previous chiefs. They told me that's not what they said—according to the spokesperson, SPD told KUOW his travel to major police conferences like IACP was normal, not his frequent trips to his home in Chicago.
KUOW says that "influencers" like me are the reason you should give them money. If you want "police say" statements, I guess go for it. If you want deeply sourced, in-depth investigative reporting by someone who's been a journalist in Seattle since 2001, support PubliCola! publicola.com/support/

@seattletimes.com @kuow.org Are you going to demand that the CEO of Sound Transit have a presser on this? Or is your outage only for leaders who are women?
Just want to check I didn't miss anything. Dow Constantine still hasn't held a press conference about the downtown portion of the system being shut down for 14 hours right?

Is sound transit's CEO Dow Constantine really meeting the moment right now? Where's the communication about the train derailment? How many hours should we expect to be without a press conference to answer our questions?
New forecasts show #Seattle not only faces heat, but thick wildfire smoke this week that could bring poor to perhaps even unhealthy air quality at times :( Latest info in my ECW blog: emeraldcityweather.com/heat-wildfir... #wawx

We are hearing from community about increased federal immigration activity in Seattle. I am deeply troubled to see Seattleites taken from their family, friends, and neighborhoods. 1/3
The other thing Durkan did was, oh, just...deleting 8 months of texts with top officials during the most chaotic period in our city's modern history and she got off scot free. No charges for destroying public records, no recall. But please tell me more about your little tardy press conference
There’s also something to how women are socialized to be suspicious of flattery — it’s how we transfer responsibility for men’s desire onto women’s bodies; we are taught to defend against that in service to our “innocence” or whatever — whereas men accept flattery as their due. Perfect marks.
West Coast cities are caught in a doom loop where the problem keeps growing but political elites refuse to admit that solving it requires more funding. Every few years someone comes along promising to "finally" crack down, gets elected and fails to deliver. That would have been worth writing about.
He ends by implying that this is an easy problem to solve if we could just drop our left-wing ideology long enough to finally impose consequences on homeless people and addicts. Not only is this unconstitutional, it's also incredibly expensive! Either way we're providing housing and services.
The core argument is that cities like Seattle are so addled by left-wing ideology that they have fallen into dystopia. In reality, the city has never adequately funded harm reduction programs and continues to rely on incarceration to address homelessness. What Powell wants is what we're doing.

With a small edit, that last part could really add some pop to the closing of my emails: “The only conclusion to be made is that [event has happened] and you should give me large sums of money.”
I'm proud to announce this morning that I ALSO failed to do basic due diligence to air gap my hacking software and it immediately proceeded to do exactly what it was programmed for the only conclusion to be made is that the singularity has arrived and you should give me large sums of money

The goal of surveillance pricing is to shift all the "consumer surplus" (the difference between the highest price you're willing to pay and the price you actually pay) to companies. 16/
Bruce Harrell hired Barnes, previously the chief in Madison, WI, with no public process; he received a $50,000 bonus to come here. I first reported a year ago that his family home is in Chicago; he rents an apartment here. Barnes makes $373,000 a year and is frequently out of town, as I've reported.

I don't want a "Smart Fridge" that orders milk for me. I want a fridge that lasts 25 years and doesn't have a privacy policy that allows it to share my late-night snacking habits with my health insurance provider.
one old the other things is that apart from the trauma, WFH was both good and bad for us in a lot of ways, coming back from WFH was often done in an intentionally abusive way meant to assert the authority of the bosses, and in the immediate aftermath the layoffs began
One of my Crank Theories of Everything, at least of Everything in the Recent Past, is that we are dealing (badly) with COVID trauma we’d mostly prefer to pretend never happened.
The music industry loves itself some racial segmentation, I swear.
BTS announces they will not submit their music for the 2027 GRAMMY awards, following the Recording Academy’s addition of an Asian-focused category: “I hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language.”
