This is a good question to address, actually. There's often an intuitive assumption that when a country runs out of money, its war effort will grind to a halt. That's how households and (sometimes) companies work. But those assumptions are really frequently frustrated - countries can push on.

If they can’t export oil, how is Iran going to fund this war? Obviously defending countries tend to find a way, but man is this going to be brutal for their economy. They already had a brittle economy with terrible inflation.

There’s lots of criticism of this, but to a large extent this should be understood as electoral positioning on the left. A key left criticism of the Greens is that they aren’t sufficiently anti-NATO - this pushes back on that even if it erodes some of the soft left votes that the Greens also want.

Very happy to see this published online. A thought provoking and beautifully crafted article that suggests we centre ‘being’ rather than active ‘doing’ in classroom. Well worth a read, this will be part of a forthcoming symposium on active learning in the Politics journal.

The abstract reads: "Active learning is often understood as students ‘doing and producing’ academic work. This approach has a tendency to promote learning as a project of dynamic knowledge acquisition rather than one of being and becoming. In this article, we propose a more capacious understanding of active learning that makes room for spacious learning. Spacious learning invites students into slower spaces that centre ‘being’ rather than rushing to do or produce. This approach treats learning as a process rather than a means to an end, allowing students time to sit with ideas and to relate them to their own lives and experiences. We then offer practical examples of invitations to spacious learning in political science, highlighting transformative everyday practices that sustain spaciousness in the classroom: micro-communities of learning, relational scaffolding for research and creative projects, and reflective writing."
