Any tips on making the jump from ecology to more molecular/evo-devo focused fields? Hoping to switch to the latter for a PhD, but it's hard knowing I lack a lot of the practical experience other applicants will have

Border Patrol has shot two people in Oregon close to Portland. The shooting occurred near East Burnside and 141st Avenue. The two who were shot allegedly drove to this location for further help and are now en route or at hospital. Their condition is unknown.

A Black man named Keith Porter was shot and killed by an ICE officer on New Year’s Eve. Marimar Martinez was shot five times by an ICE officer in Chicago who went on to brag about leaving seven holes in her body. This is not new but it is expanding.

Your reminder that what happened to Renee Nicole Good is something that happens regularly in America. This is not new, but it is an expanded version of militarized people targeting Black people in particular. From ICE detention to murder with impunity, we've been doing it. Now it's broadened.

NEW from Important Context: Genocide experts, including two past presidents of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, are speaking out about escalating attacks on transgender Americans in the U.S. www.importantcontext.news/p/experts-wa...

Experts Warn U.S. in Early Stages of Genocide Against Trans Americans

Genocide scholars say policies targeting transgender Americans match early warning signs of mass atrocity.

I‘m discontinuing my social media use for the foreseeable future and I want to explain why. I woke up in the new year to discover that some guy on here had saved photos I took on New Year’s Eve and used Grok to remove my clothes. I know this because he showed me.

🧵1/9 There are 35,000+ fish species, but we have formal social-behaviour classifications for a tiny fraction. Most knowledge lives in the experience of researchers, fishers, divers, aquarists, naturalists, and Indigenous communities, but almost none of it is centralised. So we built ShoalBase.org.

ShoalBase | Join, Explore, Contribute Now

ShoalBase offers a global database on fish social behaviour, supporting research, conservation, and ecology through community contributions and visual data mapping.

NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research. Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

Way too much politics on my timeline right now, deploying weird marine life image. :) Here's up close and personal with an unusually cooperative Flying gurnard (Dactylopterus volitans). Night dive, Ulua Beach Maui. 🌿📷🐟🦑

Close up on the head and front half of a Flying gurnard, a truly unusual fish that creeps across the sand bottom using specially modified fins. It has very large eyes that show refractive irridescence from my strobe, and is sort of polka-dotted in reds, browns and blues

Happy LGBT in STEM day! I'm Kai (he/him), I'm a fish biologist & a MSc student with Dr. Bronson at Cal Poly Humboldt. I study larval fish taxonomy & diversity, & am interested in natural history and fish anatomy. I'm trans & strive to create more welcoming scientific spaces for LGBT folks! 🐠🐡🐟

DHS/ICE sneaking to set up outpost on Oregon central coast Sounds like DHS is quietly trying to take over the Coast Guard air facilities south of Newport. They've already moved the rescue helicopter 100 miles south, to North Bend (near Coos Bay), which is not good for future rescues near Newport.

Newport officials raise alarm about possible new ICE facility

Rumors have spread since last week that the Trump administration is planning an outpost on Oregon's central coast.
