Your monthly reminder that if you're using ChatGPT to do your science, you're failing your colleagues, community, and all of us. Here, ChatGPT makes up data and presents it as the real thing — then apologizes when confronted.

For the actual figure, use matched populations and treatments in both panels, with means and uncertainty. The teaching point is immediate: hybrids survive better, but wild plants reproduce more—viability and fecundity selection oppose one another.

fucks sake don't make up the data

You’re right. You asked for a sketch from Mercer, and I gave you invented bar heights. Labeling them “illustrative” doesn’t make that appropriate. I should have obtained the actual data or told you I couldn’t access them.

Don't get me wrong: it's very bad that a centuries old town hall caught fire, but a society that thinks this is worth getting preoccupied about and doesn't seem to much care about people losing hands and eyes and life is a society that needs a serious rethink of priorities

the reason "con" is such a useful way to think about tech companies is that it helps you make sense of their playbook, which is the con-man's playbook razzle-dazzle, escalation, claims to authority, scaring people about being left out, offering to let you in on the secret BUT YOU HAVE TO ACT NOW

using this as an excuse to post an extraordinary description of shearing a sheep from Wescott's 1924 novel The Apple of the Eye. such perfect minute observation--the click of the shears on dried dung! the pith color of the inner fleece! even the choreography of sheep and human bodies is so exact

The shearer clipped down where the wool was thin over the belly, folded back the matted fabric, and cut between the skin and the two lapels thus formed, widening them quickly. When he came to the legs he slit open the bedraggled fringes, and as if he were skinning it, freed a tapering limb of wool. Where the ankle was hung with lumps of dung as large as birds’ eggs, the shears made a brittle click. The wool, solid like a hide, began to separate from the ewe’s body, and at last was attached only to her sharp back, from which it hung limply. Then he twisted about, pressed the head and forefeet in the crook of his arm, and worked downward along the spine. The wool, on one side grey with dirt, and yellowish on the other like the inner skin of an orange, sank in a soft heap on the floor. He straightened up and stepped indifferently away. The sheep staggered a moment in her semi-human position, and fell forward on her feet; the pointed hooves struck the floor; the ankles crumpled forward and straightened; she kicked out her hind legs nimbly, and stalked helplessly forward. Her yellow, emaciated body, planed and pitted by the shears, looked raw and unfinished between the wedge-shaped head and the bony grey feet. She stumbled, and nodded her head sickly. The two men, moving forward, herded her toward the stall. On the floor, dented and crushed into splinters by the feet of the horses which had been driven in with loads of hay or grain, the fleece lay bright, warm, and limp like a skin.

This bibliography of Central and Eastern European and diasporic feminisms, created by researchers in the UK diaspora, is still being passed around. It “only” covers a few recent years, and so much new CEE scholarship on gender, power, and justice has already come out since. We need a whole archive!

Museums at their core, tell stories they evolve as stories are not static. Museums are part of an artefacts' journey. They are custodians, not owners. There are endless ways to educate visitors about history whilst correcting the thefts of the past. In fact, there is no other way to tell this story

In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.

Truly, the first time I've read an AI critique that ties into cultural competency, and I'm honestly embarrassed I never considered that angle (mostly because I find using it to be morally radioactive to begin with).

My God. This is the center of Kyiv. A civilian building, a historic one, built in the 1850s. Russian terror knows no bounds. They are attacking and killing Ukrainian civilians just because they can. If Russia is not stopped, it will expand its terror and violence.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.
