This paper shows that immigration enforcement can _increase_ crime. Undocumented immigrants already have the lowest crime rate, but tough-on-immigration policy makes immigrants less likely to report crime. So immigration enforcement worsens the problem it was ostensibly meant to solve

Community Engagement and Public Safety: Evidence from Crime Enforcement Targeting Immigrantst By FELIPE GONÇALVES, ELISA JÁCOME, AND EMILY WEISBURST* We study the role of victim reporting in the production of public safety. We examine the Secure Communities program, a crime-reduction policy that involved police in detecting unauthorized immigrants and increased deportation fears in immigrant communities. We find that the policy reduced the likelihood that Hispanic victims report crimes to police and increased offending against Hispanics. The number of reported crimes is unchanged, masking these opposing effects. We show that reduced reporting drives the offending increase and provide the first elasticity of offending to victim reporting in the liter-ature, calculating that a 10 percent decline in reporting increases offending by 7.9 percent. Nothing routine about it. In CA, it took a state Supreme Court decision to get us the names of police who shoot our neighbors. Transparency is hard fought & policing culture - regardless of level of government - resists it at every step.

Police departments routinely release the names of officers who’ve shot people. Immigration agents have shot and killed nine people since Jan 2025. The Trump admin has not named any of those agents. www.pbs.org/newshour/pol...

The best story ICE could make up, after 12 hours, is that ICE agents shot someone in the head because they believed the person they shot, who was not accused of any crime, was a different person also not accused of any crime, and so "public safety" required killing them on the spot.

It took DHS 12 hours to come up with this statement, And the best they could come up with is that ICE shot and killed an unarmed man who didn’t present a threat to the agents. They know they fucked this one up. And it’ll be up to state and local prosecutors—not the feds—to make the case
