"A concentration camp, in its most basic definition, is a place where a targeted civilian population, not necessarily accused of a crime, is detained and at least some of their basic rights are suspended," writes @jwashing.bsky.social. "That’s precisely what’s happening in the United States today."
Don’t call them ICE detention centers. Call them camps | John Washington
I’ve spent a decade reporting on immigration enforcement. The word ‘camp’ best captures the political function of these facilities

65,000 people inside US concentration camps.
🚨 ICE just published their recent numbers and it's worse than we thought. JUNE: ICE and CBP took 43,138 people. That works out to 1,474 of our neighbors every single day. JULY: 65,765 people are now inside US concentration camps.

People who are suddenly deported to countries they haven’t been to for years — or, in some cases, have NEVER been to — are incredibly vulnerable. We are going to be reading stories like this for years. God have mercy on their three little girls.
“If immigration hadn't picked up my brother, my sister-in-law would still be alive, and the children wouldn't be going through this sorrow,” he said. “Unfortunately, immigration — the [U.S.] government — doesn't see that. It makes no difference to them.” www.stlpr.org/law-order/20...
[i should probably right this essay voice] immigration is good and we should do more of it, and after trump's insanity, rebuilding immigrant numbers is going to *require* ensuring that there is a simple and fast path to citizenship

Here's just one of the reasons I subscribed today: Marianne highlighted an organizer recognizing "this desire that we see in our community of a bunch of disabled people ready to plug in, and then this movement that’s not ready to have them plug in because there are so many access barriers.”

Tip for new authors: After the manuscript is drafted, your next step is not a line/copy editor or a proofreader. It's not even a developmental editor. Find a critique partner (or multiple). Find beta readers. Find fellow authors willing to swap chapters.

Maybe it's more work, but it's also what I routinely do. Because it just makes sense. (Since most of the hyphens are vibes anyway and we're just trying to make it work in the reader's head.) And a copyeditor is someone who finds this kind of thing FUN.
an alternative approach of "let the author pick and just change where they diverge from their own majority choice, the idle inconsistent bastards" would be nicer for the author but a lot more work for overburdened CEs.

money is what they use to break the rules and escape accountability. they've tried to create a world where not having it is the worst nightmare imaginable. I want to fix that world, but I want them to live out their days praying for a more robust safety net to catch them.
Seizing people’s ill gotten gains is entirely consistent with abolition and I do think it’s a bigger deterrent than the threat of prison. It also arguably accords more with justice as the scale & breadth of corruption-for-thievery taking place is almost unfathomable.
