Born to lurk forced to register - I like horror movies and weird movies and hysterical women

this is not at all to understate the danger we are dealing with but if I were trying to steal an election I would probably try to get my plan in motion at some point before the first three and a half million votes or so had already been cast, thank God our fascists are stupid procrastinators

If you are seeking to assuage, console, and comfort then where is the confrontation? Why even be horror? If we aren't here to horrify then what is the point? Why call it horror at all? Genuinely wtf are we doing here?

I do want to clarify a few positions. It isn't that I think horror can't have a happy ending (though you really have to earn it) but that isn't the same as uplifting. Poltergeist has a happy ending. It also forces you as the audience to confront some awful truths about modern America.

Can't stop thinking about the people who want horror to be hopeful and uplifting and why that is so diametrically opposed to what horror is and why we need horror

Yes, of course McDonald’s posting about National Coming Out Day is “performative.” Nobody thinks Ronald McDonald threw the first brick at Stonewall. Nonetheless, the biggest and most influential institutions in American life performing affirmation of LGBT social and civil equality is a good thing.

That's nice and all, but much of this is performative, *especially* when corporations are cowed by shareholders and anti-LGBT+ activists. The likes of Costco who gave anti-DEI activists the middle finger should be celebrated because they stand for diversity even in the face of shouty assholes.

My kid has started a Letterboxd list called Killer Sweaters for films where the killer wears a great sweater and they've asked me to throw it out to Bluesky for more because "that's the kind of thing those weirdos like to do"

Also not mentioned in the piece: Republicans joking about the brutal attack on Paul Pelosi, the blanket pardon of January 6th participants, no matter how violent their crimes. This dark atmosphere didn't just suddenly manifest of bipartisan causes.
