US politics is like a Safdie movie where a gang of billionaire creeps—linked by a dead pedophile—wreck the country to save themselves.

If the calculation goes If the fascists win, I am much much better off as a fascist, and screwed as an anti-fascist If the anti-fascists win, I am ok either way Then the "rational" choice (morals aside) is to go fascist. This incentive structure is incredibly dangerous, as we now see.

The only way these fascist chucklefucks make this work is by succeeding in manufacturing the *appearance* of inevitability, because they *do not* have the force or skill to win a straight fight. In short, the only weapon that can deliver them victory is you: the fool doomer whose nihilism is poison

Grandad, grandad. Why didn't you do anything to stop it all? Yeah in hindsight we should have done more. Also in foresight. But I think we just hoped someone else would sort it out for us. Felt like they should. But they must have been waiting for us to do it. Sorry.

I think you might be right about this. My 75yo mother is irate about this and is, at long last, beginning to understand what’s happening. She told me she wanted to write a letter to ABC to tell them how upset she is, then quickly changed her mind. “It’s not safe to do than anymore, is it?”

The reason affluent media people are such suckers for “civility” is that the actual content of most politics has no real stakes for them personally. If you want to find these people’s true political feelings, mess with their money.

Perhaps the most poignant tragedy of the politically-motivated institutionalization of traditional practices is the fossilization of the tradition itself. The accumulated wisdom of the tradition can never be liberated, can never spread worldwide to help more people.

For me, the vision of sifting the vast range of traditional Chinese treatments through the sieve of evidence — sorting placebo from non-placebo, discerning active components, becoming aware of side effects — seems like a heroic national project, one that would put China on the scientific map and benefit all of humanity. But the idea of applying rigorous evidence-based methods, ultimately eliminating the idea of a separate TCM itself, is unacceptable to institutionalised TCM.

it is possible for a society to distribute quality education in an equitable, fair, and accessible way. it is not possible to distribute hierarchical elite power in a similar fashion, because that's not how elite power works.
