Since the opioid epidemic people living w/chronic pain have had very few safe options without serious side effects. Used responsibly, botanical kratom is one of the best. It is well-known elsewhere in the world, and the research is incredibly promising pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

I'm not thrilled Markey is running again but it's not a hard choice between benevolent grandpa with nonthreatening Boston accent vs. sweaty middle-aged loser who can't stop talking about how much he hates trans kids

Excellent thread w important context for potential approval of GLP-1 drugs within addiction medicine. Ppl in early recovery are especially vulnerable to relapse. Our healthcare system is full of gaps & cliffs, esp for those who are poor and marginalized. Extreme caution is warranted here.

i want to get vulnerable for a sec and talk about my experience with the GLP-1 as someone who had an alcohol addiction. now, at the time i started taking it, i didn't really get cravings anymore except under extreme stress (even then they were very brief). the GLP-1 eliminated my cravings 100%. Unexpected GLP-1 side effect? Studies show the meds may help people with addictions thehill.com/policy/healt...

In the treatment world, we use “process addictions” to describe many of these. The neurological changes associated with LLM and other tech are an escalation I think, in terms of the their persistence in reshaping human cognition & behavior and because they’ve been normalized/ adopted at scale.

I've felt for a while that we need a lot of study & maybe eventually new language for a whole host of toxic dependencies that may not fit the exact chemical/medical definition of addiction but are still dangerous, potentially life-wrecking problems that may need treatment to address.

Hey all — an ask. A local father of three was detained by ICE last month. One of his daughters is in treatment for Stage IV cancer and he's her primary caregiver. He's been released temporarily, but he'll be redetained indefinitely unless he makes a $25,000 bond. Any bit would help.

I spent part of Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony cowering and reaching in a bathroom at work. Women are now routinely expected to relive their worst moments in public, to an uncaring, unbelieving and hostile audience to prevent the worst sociopaths from reaching the heights of power in the US.

If politicians really want to “save childhood,” they can start by ensuring every child has three meals a day, a safe place to sleep, and safe access to education. Banning social media does nothing to help kids who don’t have basic resources.

Even without considering the content, calling your supposedly grand plan to right the ship "Project 2029" is a reactive failure of vision. Come up with something even vaguely original and inspiring.

Thinking about the veterans who came home & later lost their lives to suicide, incarceration, or preventable disease bc their country abandoned them. They too are casualties of war. Here is my dad, Vietnam Era seaman, who died from cancer due to engine room asbestos exposure in 2023. #MemorialDay

Black and white photo of my dad shortly after enlistment. He is a slender white man w dark hair. He is dressed in Vietnam era US Navy blue dungaree uniform with his sleeves rolled up.

I really don't know what to do with these people. I, a dedicated socialist, voted for your shitty candidate because I knew what the stakes were. All people did is object to genocide, which is the baseline moral obligation of any human being.

All of you who refused to vote for Kamala Harris "because Palestine!" -- this gutting of the voting rights act is on you. You selfish, entitled, spoiled White social justice cosplayers.

Given the argument that ended the VRA, I think it’s time liberals did some self reflection about the now decades long obsession with partisan polarization as the problem, as opposed to authoritarianism, extremism, oligarchy, and racism
