I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Climate change is literally canceling US independence Day celebrations. The July 4 parade in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence, has been canceled due to extreme heat. Heat waves aren’t new - what’s new is that climate change is making them hotter and more dangerous.

This isn’t actually funny but I keep cackling to myself when people say we should pursue AI because it will tell us how to solve climate change. Like, we *know* how, we’re just not. ::burns so much fossil fuel to ask:: hey AI, what do?
still not quite over the fact that i watched 15 year olds get sued for millions of dollars for downloading twelve songs and now we all have to accept AI slop because every tech company in the known universe decided that IP laws don't exist now that they're inconvenient for them
Like, I cannot believe that capital took at look at climate breakdown and said, “yeah no, we’re not going to decarbonize; we’re going to build tens of thousands of huge conglomerates of machines that use a shit ton of water and methane instead.”
New study: most climate models underestimate the decline of the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC. The AMOC is on course to slow by more than 50% by the end of the century. 🌊 Very likely the AMOC will then be past the tipping point for full shutdown. 😨 us.cnn.com/2026/04/16/c...
A vital system of Atlantic Ocean currents is weakening and closer to collapse than thought, new studies find | CNN
New research provides alarming evidence this ocean circulation is slowing and could be heading toward a shutdown, which would have catastrophic impacts on the planet’s weather and climate.

This is how disciplines die. Now that Sociology courses don't count for GenEd credit, far fewer students will take them, let alone choose Sociology as a major. And so, Sociology department budgets will shrink, meaning fewer faculty and fewer courses offered. www.miamiherald.com/news/politic...
Florida bans sociology from core curriculum at state universities
For years, Republican lawmakers and education leaders have argued that sociology — especially high-enrollment introductory courses — has been overtaken by progressive ideology

This is completely outside of the realm of anything remotely normal for abnormal weather.
As the first reanalysis data become available, I think I can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that the March 2026 heatwave will go down as the most anomalously extreme heat event ever observed at any time of year in the southwestern U.S.
The best time to have invested in renewables, walkable cities and transit to avoid the oil crisis shock was twenty years ago. The second best time is today.
Fossil capital throwing its weight behind authoritarians is a reaction to the democratic power of the global climate movement 2017-2022. Remember: over those years everyone discovered that carbon-dioxide removal is hard, so for fossil capital global decarbonization would have been apocalyptic. 1/2
It is absolutely gobsmacking to me that the media and research elite have so disavowed climate change that they cannot see that the Trump regime's both domestic and foreign policy centers on securing American control over the fossil fuel economy, despite accelerating impacts of global heating.

Interesting Interview on many levels.
Here's Colbert's interview with Talarico, not on the Carr-controlled, Trump-tainted airwaves but in the free air of the internet. As I post this, 500k have watched. Let's make sure more people see it on YouTube than TV. Call that the Carr Effect. www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiTJ...

Cannot reccomend this strongly enough. For me personally so many elements of fascism whenever it emerges in the world seem to have a seed in the fossil fuel economy, the outrageous lies of climate denial. Fighting against fossil fuels = fighting against the tools of fascism.
Wrote myself a pep talk to get back to work tomorrow. It helped me. Hope it helps you.
10/ Politicians igored them because warnings alone do not compel action in the face of organised vested interests. Fossil capital. Extractive industries. Short-term political incentives. Institutional inertia. These were always the real obstacles, not a lack of credibility.
