This would be the most important local finance reform since Elizabeth I. Finally introducing local revenue sources that aren't property taxes will ensure places really benefit from local growth - more jobs and/or higher wages in a place will translate into more investment and services:

I think this reflexive anti-technology posture is difficult enough for the right but a complete political dead end from the left. Incredibly frustrating and sad to see.
Let's just leave it up to the market. If Brits decide they want air conditioning then let them. What's wrong is that the state discourages it.

London has had an average of six days a year with temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius (86F) in the past decade. Chicago has 30+ days at 90F (32C) a year. There's a reason Brits didn't have AC
Incredibly bleak and needlessly pessimistic view of the boundaries of state capacity that is also obviously politically toxic in the long term. Politicians would be wise to avoid this attitude at all costs.

I say this not as “shouldn’t build the tram” but one thing badly wrong with Reeves’ approach is that it has confused “the good stuff you have to get re-elected to keep doing” (building more infrastructure) with “stuff that gets you re-elected”.

The real takeaway from this is just what a disaster statutory obligations are for democracy. An attempt to hide where the costs go that has screwed over all the most visible bits of government and has empowered popularism by forcing councils to make choices no one in their right mind would vote for.
