I’ve lost my dog, Nico. She is very dear to me and I am absolutely heartbroken. She was last seen in Silkstream park in Colindale London. If you see her, can you let me know? I realise she could be anywhere in the country now if she got into someone’s car...

Found this on the beach. It's either a giant crab, or the remains of that creature which attached itself to John Hurt's face in that film about an alien. I can't remember what it was called.

Memorial Hall, Pickering & the North York Moors National Park. The Landscape Survey Group’s 2026 conference will combine a day of in-person presentations followed by a day visiting the North York Moors. The conference will explore the growing role of landscape archaeology in shaping nature recovery, climate resilience and long-term land management. It seeks to bring together archaeologists, heritage/ecology/conservation professionals, land managers and community groups to consider how applied archaeological knowledge and investigation can help support better decision-making. At a time when environmental change is accelerating, this conference asks how the deep-time perspective of landscape archaeology can help shape more resilient futures. By reading the past carefully, we can act in ways that respect complexity, protect heritage, restore ecological value and strengthen the relationship between people and place. Papers are sought on how archaeological evidence, historic landscape character, traditional land-use and community memory can all contribute to more integrated approaches to nature recovery. Focus will be placed on recent case studies where landscape archaeology has helped develop collaborative, landscape-level restoration and recovery strategies. Projects may include (but need not be restricted to) improving biodiversity, habitat creation or other landscape management work. Presentations should show how archaeological survey, including field observation and recording, aerial survey methodologies and local knowledge can reveal not only what survives, but how that understanding can support practical management, partnership working and wider public benefit. To contribute a 20min paper or a poster, please send titles & abstracts (250 words max) to andrew.burn@historicengland.org.uk by 31 July.

The BBC athletics website doesn't show the Commonwealth Games in its calendar of events, nor are there any big features about the meet. There are, however, some articles gleefully reporting various athletes pulling out of the games. I wonder if they're sulking because the coverage went elsewhere?

My first dawn swim in a while. On the way to the beach, I startled a fish which was only a couple of feet from the shore. The wildlife was wary. A lone gull flew overhead, circling me once. A clattering of jackdaws, all flying on the same heading, split slightly, so that none flew directly over me.
