i think the wilson–nolan stuff was so explosive because nolan-heads are susceptible to the delusion that his stuff is much more highbrow than it really is, and bluesky heads are susceptible to the delusion that they are the number one homework do-ers, and wilson threatened both myths simultaneously
One of my Crank Theories of Everything is that the kind of work that survives and becomes part of the canon are stories that feature internal contradictions, because that means they have a rich text that can resonate with people in radically different circumstances and contexts.
