Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.
The most convincing theory for Trump’s rise is that there is an enormous part of the population that is scared that society is moving at such a rapid pace. They’re worried they won’t be seen as “normal” so they adopt reactionary positions to try to pull everyone back to a place of personal comfort.

The news is always "This absolute fool was dismantled in hearings today. He is manifestly unqualified for the position and would be an existential danger if confirmed. Disaster. He is set to be confirmed immediately." When you ask why everyone is furious and exhausted all the time, this is why.
This is why we need primaries. We need to filter these kinds of people out (& defeat them handily) before Republicans get a chance to campaign against them, dominate them, and absolutely annihilate us with “This person represents every Democrat” talking points.

Republicans just postponed the War Powers vote on Iran because they knew they were going to LOSE. Members of both parties were ready to reassert Congress’s constitutional authority over war and peace. Instead of facing that vote, GOP leadership ran from it.
