Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.
The most convincing theory for Trump’s rise is that there is an enormous part of the population that is scared that society is moving at such a rapid pace. They’re worried they won’t be seen as “normal” so they adopt reactionary positions to try to pull everyone back to a place of personal comfort.
There is some value in committing to an “I’m a normal guy” perspective and channeling your own responses to political activity into analysis. The problem is that it is almost impossible to make punditry and analysis your full time job and remain a normal guy.
not sure how anyone can stay on an app thats fighting in court for the right to generate non consensual nudes of people, including children
Bluesky knew the strait of Hormuz, Graham Platner, and AIPAC democrats were all cooked months before the experts did. Meanwhile Twitter was convinced Spencer Pratt would win and the Odyssey would bomb. Which site is the not-real-life echo chamber again?
extremely funny to me that analysts whose entire job is to think about these possibilities are only now catching up to Bluesky Consensus

Only 8% of "moderates" actually want moderation
Two new studies reveal very few voters want a genuinely centrist political party — and moderation's electoral payoff is smaller, riskier, and less reliable than its advocates suggest

BREAKING: The FDA just rescinded the only positive cyclospora test against Taylor Farms — the company at the center of the outbreak. They company donated $1M to Trump and just met with the White House 3 days before the decision. More here: www.edwardswire.com/p/trump-dono...
Trump donor's positive diarrhea lettuce test vanishes after White House sit-down
The FDA's only positive test in America's worst parasite outbreak in years survived exactly one day — and what happened at the White House 72 hours earlier is why nobody's buying the walk-back.

I think one reason data center outrage is so pronounced is people spent decades recycling and composting and otherwise scrimping to offset energy use and protect clean water, and the second we hit an inflection point for cheap electricity the banking industry said we’re taking all of it, fuck you
The news is always "This absolute fool was dismantled in hearings today. He is manifestly unqualified for the position and would be an existential danger if confirmed. Disaster. He is set to be confirmed immediately." When you ask why everyone is furious and exhausted all the time, this is why.
This is why we need primaries. We need to filter these kinds of people out (& defeat them handily) before Republicans get a chance to campaign against them, dominate them, and absolutely annihilate us with “This person represents every Democrat” talking points.

Mamdani went to college in Maine. Can he be the Senator? And remain governor of NYC, of course.
Really testing the “how much of an asshole can you be and still win as a Republican in Texas?” question.
Speaking of scumbags, Ken Paxton has been caught in London with his mistress instead of campaigning for Senate in Texas. No wonder the GOP Is so freaked out about this race.
if everyone took one second to ask whether the blue check X anons they’re crossposting or the 50-follower bluesky leftists they’re fighting with in the replies are disinfo accounts using LLMs to manufacture distrust and infighting:
The Supreme Court Gives Donald Trump Full Control Over the Executive Branch, Except the Part of It that Impacts Their Retirement Portfolios
“restoring faith that better is possible” is maybe the most important thing in politics right now outside of imposing consequences on the bad people (and imposing consequences would help restore faith) we have seen what cynical, “lol nothing matters” politics leads to and it leads to Donald Trump
My not-so-hot take is that what Mamdani is doing *IS* incrementalism, and the bar is so deeply in hell that a politician just doing *anything* good consistently is a total anomaly for people. And I think for now that is good and fine, because it is restoring people’s faith that better is possible.
Say what you want about Trump, he never beats around the bush. “The White House, brought to you by Bud Light” is real on-the-nose.

Kathy Hochul can be the first Governor to actually stand up to Trump, at a time when he is historically unpopular. All she has to do is tell NYS Troopers & the NYPD to enforce the laws. Will she do it?
The Trump administration has drawn up a plan to surge US Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel to New York City, a move that threatens to escalate tensions with New York Governor Kathy Hochul over the president’s migrant crackdown.
This is the guy that Republicans think is a strong, masculine leader. This is the guy that Republicans allow to break the law, steal tax dollars for himself, and start ridiculous wars. This is the guy that elected Republicans shower with praise. What are we doing here? Impeach this guy already.

My favorite part is when Brooke Rollins says, "Don't be rude" as she's trying to defend cutting food benefits for children. Truly MAGA in a nutshell: They get to be horrible people and then act offended when someone criticizes them.
ANGIE CRAIG: I don't think you understand the difference between error rates and fraud rates. I honestly don't. SNAP has one of the lowest fraud rates of any program BROOKE ROLLINS: You can't be serious when you say that CRAIG: Your own data says that
That Ben Wikler guy should run the entire Democratic Party.
Here is my first forecast for this year's state legislative elections in Wisconsin. Thanks to a Democratic environment and fairer maps passed before 2024, the Wisconsin Democrats stand a good chance at creating their first trifecta in over a decade
This is just a money grab, right? Same thing Yglesias is doing? Basically trying to convince big money guys (who see the writing on the wall & realize that Dems will soon be in control) to give them money so that the “evil” socialists don’t win and tax the shit out of them?
Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Adam Gray (D-Calif.) have launched what they hope will act as a rallying cry for centrists, declaring that “we are capitalist, not socialist.”
A weird thing is that they would both get trounced in the Republican Party by Donald Trump Jr. because the Republican voters have been trained into thinking that the most important thing in the world is saying “Fuck you” to Democrats (and junior is the biggest “fuck you” imaginable)
(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said in a podcast interview broadcast on Wednesday that Vice President JD Vance and U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, running together as a team in 2028, would be unbeatable. @reuters.com
so like lemme weigh in on this as someone who is more financially comfortable than many in my generational cohort: everything I have gained seems precarious and temporary because I know the people with real money will take it all from me the second they get an opportunity and no one will protect me.
"People have stopped believing that the economy can be good, and have lost the willingness to admit that they are doing well. That pessimism might be harder to fix than an actual downturn," @annielowrey.bsky.social argues.

There may be a prudential case against passing articles of impeachment, or conducting a trial, at least so long as Republicans remain committed to Trump’s impunity. But there’s no good case against invoking the impeachment power. The one Dems lean on is weak. www.offmessage.net/p/the-revisi...
Republicans just postponed the War Powers vote on Iran because they knew they were going to LOSE. Members of both parties were ready to reassert Congress’s constitutional authority over war and peace. Instead of facing that vote, GOP leadership ran from it.
