I also think that the learning for a future pandemic is how to keep schools open as long as possible and how to mitigate harm if closures are necessary. Not hard to imagine a virus that e.g. is more virulent in children. A blanket "never close schools" policy in future pandemics makes little sense.

Contemporary Trek speaks from and to an entirely different world, a broken social contract. That it maintains a fragile sense of commitment to Utopia is a small miracle. That it sees Utopia as process not place or idea or institution is what will save us.

Friendship, recognition of found kinship, trust, equity, greeting the other: these are the building blocks upon which the good society must be built. Why should one feel a sense of duty towards a society that fails and excludes you?

We build something bigger from our interactions with those around us: learning from difference, offering hospitality, meeting the other in peace and not with fear. This seems the whole point of SFA to me, in which the rubble of Utopia is being rebuilt from what’s left behind…

Later seasons of Discovery are concerned with rebuilding that something bigger. But what is the foundation of that something bigger? Bland belief in the strength of institutions is not enough. A flag is meaningless if there is an ethical void behind it; a constitution is worthless if not lived…

I would respectfully disagree with this. Contemporary Trek is imho primarily concerned with what happens to our belief in and duty towards something bigger than ourselves when that something *is failing or has failed*. Picard S1, daringly, gives that narrative to the most Starfleet of them all…
