Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences

This is as true about political content as it is about everything else. "What people are talking about" is not the result of spontaneous distributed decisionmaking, it is the result of the conscious efforts of specific human beings. You should always be asking, why this & not that? Who benefits?

I really don't know what we do about living in a digital age where "the left" as it is understood and monetized online has basically zero connection-- ideological or otherwise-- to the actual movement in this country. It's a bunch of reactionaries who rode the Bernie train to niche fame.
