This MIT report on AI and teaching is rightfully getting lots of praise: aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/. There's a ton to like, but it exemplifies a trend I see on Bluesky around AI + pedagogy conversations: they tend to leave out online learning entirely.

On self-diagnosis: "Grasping at the diagnostic category du jour may be misguided, but the desperation driving it is authentic. You can no more reproach someone for it than you can blame a starving person for eyeing a menu; they are both looking for sustenance, however illusory it may prove."

“The Berkeley International Office announced Wednesday that it will pause international students’ applications for Course Credit Curricular Practical Training “for the foreseeable future.”

We are a broken nation. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians were living and working legally, paying taxes, and contributing. Haiti remains wholly unsafe. But Trump hates Haitians, and the White House wanted videos of Black people in chains, so they stripped them of status and turned on the cameras.
It's mostly not about the technology, itself. They are angry about A.I. because they are anxious about how to be successful. No one in charge will tell them the new path to upward mobility. No seems to want to even figure one out. All anyone will talk to them about is A.I.

“AI is going to be a massive issue for the presidential election in a way that technology has never been … Nobody wants to lose their job and they’re already feeling squeezed while these very, very rich people who are richer than anything we have ever seen in the history of Earth are making more.“

“For people with money, the existence of one of their economic peers who calls for, say, higher taxes on the rich … is an implicit insult to all of the rich people who did not do that, because it goes to show that they could have done something more selfless if they wanted to.”

Every time a right winger points and laughs at a socialist who was born rich, it should be understood as a desperate attempt to justify their own moral failure to themselves. If you grew up rich and are now a leftist and someone points that out, the proper response is: “Yes I am. Why aren’t you?”

I learned today about something called the Gartner Hype Cycle. This idea seems especially useful in thinking about inflated expectations for AI, as the graph below shows.
It feels like industry is waiting for universities to come up with ideas about how they can use Ai and all I can think is: it is not my job to make your business more profitable.
