This is one reason I preach the @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social gospel of asking what things do more than what they mean. It's not that the state is disengaged from meaning making--quite the opposite, ours is a meme state--rather, they are an uninterested audience. But gravity exists regardless of belief

it's not that mass politics and public opinion don't matter any more -- they just matter in different ways and configurations against state power in unconsolidated competitive authoritarian states, and pretending they're still playing the democratic role is bad news

Aaron Swartz, coding prodigy and hacktivist who helped develop RSS and was a co-founder of Reddit, died by suicide after facing $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison for felony charges, just for downloading pdfs of research papers with the intention of making them accessible to the public.

Being GenX/Millennial is such a trip. In our lifetimes, we saw people our age getting wild criminal penalties for pirating music and now have to sit and watch as companies gobble up our work with impunity.

We also gotta get out of the panopticon mindset and start reading and dancing to music again and stop video-ing each other doing anything slightly weird and taking pictures of strangers on the subway like volunteer cops. Documenting an uninteresting life nonstop instead of living interesting life.

I think "reading a book is performative" is the end point of American anti-intellectualism. The mere act of reading is now suspicious to swaths of slug people.

I think intimately understanding the labour investment involved in an artistic project changes the way you criticize, which is why lazy young people who aren't good at anything yet lean into Cinemasins style pedantry

According to the legal action team Collectif d'action judicaire that is assisting detained kids : “Police practices are not adapted to account for their status as minors.”. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child prohibits arbitrary detention and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (Art 37).

Insidious covert spread of Poptimism made everyone think overcaptilized bullshit made without personality is equivalent to actual good art. If you have the guts to actually have discerning taste, then the machine can never reproduce what is valuable to you about art.

I hope another lesson learned from the Cornell case is that college students can’t just “go to the police.” A lot of public and elite private universities have their own police departments with exclusive jurisdiction over their campus. So going to the police still means reporting to your school.
