enough changes have accumulated that I've decided to make a new release of STbayes 🥳 Bunch of improvements, and I've dumped quite a few hours into implementing a relatively painless leave-future-out cross validation (LFO-CV) procedure for model comparison (michaelchimento.github.io/STbayes/news...)

Many of my group round for dinner last night on a beautiful evening to wish @andreaestandia.bsky.social & @nilomr.bsky.social well as they move back to Spain. Both of them did DPhils here then postdocs & brought so much to Oxford & @egioxford.bsky.social in terms of science, culture & friendship
my favorite bit of criticism from grant reviews this year, "applicant weakness: development impacted by PhD supervisor". is there someone who hasn't been? what's the alternative meant to be? "applicant mercifully unmolested by previous supervisory attempts"

this could be partially addressed by solving of the perennial absurdities of academia: the blatant double dipping by publishers. they get paid to publish content, and again by institutions to access that content. if this model were broken, it would free up funds for other costs, indirect & otherwise
ERC could instead just make indirect costs ineligible That would get a lot of pushback from infrastructure-heavy institutions, but it’s justifiable on it own terms (“we fund the projects themselves, not the costs of running a place”) and it would certainly reduce the number of applications

Whenever someone says "there are no civilians in [country]," they are making an argument for genocide.

Some reports say over 500 schools, 55 libraries, & 25 universities hit. You can debate the numbers, but hitting Sharif University & Beheshti is like hitting MIT & Stanford. I keep wondering: How would the scientific community respond differently if it was those universities? What’s the difference?
