I’ve been screening our documentary with organizing communities in the South. So far, the organizers mention data centers first at every single event. From racial justice orgs to old school activists who don’t usually think about tech policy. This has legs.
The $30 million AIPAC wasted in Michigan, wasted trying to help Haley Stevens, could have been used to fully fund and deliver 6 million malaria nets to sub-Saharan Africa. Or, it could have fully paid for universal free school breakfasts in Mississippi, America's poorest state.
We have higher rates of kidney and bladder problems compared to the general population, and historically rather than address this, medicine has chosen to either ignore it or blame our healthcare. Nope, turns out marginalization just destroys bodies. Quelle surprise.

I see Miriam Cates is suggesting questions about food allergies are woke. When I was at university, there was a system of academic "parents" - people a couple of years older that one asked to be a sort of mentor. The academic mother of one of my friends died after eating a curry with almonds in it.
Yes, for most of us who have no allergies it's a bit of a nuisance. And for those with allergies it can be life or death. It's basic decency for the rest of us to put up with the nuisance.

Seizing people’s ill gotten gains is entirely consistent with abolition and I do think it’s a bigger deterrent than the threat of prison. It also arguably accords more with justice as the scale & breadth of corruption-for-thievery taking place is almost unfathomable.

And, ideally, it would leave so many of them broke that it actually becomes a deterrent. Being poor is truly all they care about not because they don’t care about prison.
In her book @mollycrabapple.bsky.social mentions Israeli torture camps. @wsj.com called this a “specious” smear in their review. Published on the same day as that review, a WSJ report that Israel's prison conditions may indeed violate torture conventions. Incoherent. Unsustainable.
Here's my theory: A certain type of politician across the Western world is constantly promising a return to a glory age of mass non-college-educated white male manufacturing employment, and lurching from ONE SIMPLE TRICK ECONOMISTS HATE HIM to the next as their magical solution to delivering it.
