Hi all, #32SLS is just around the corner (a week away)! It's not too late to make a submission for a video or slideshow, and we need more! It doesn't have to be professional-grade or even particularly polished. See the submission portal linked below for details and @tornatrix.bsky.social

#32SLS attendees: Do you have amazing, interesting, or unique weather video or slideshow to share? Please submit it to SLS Video Night! forms.gle/Eb1mo58rcwVY... As SLS is part of the AMS Summer Meeting this year, we'll have an extra-large audience! @meteodan.bsky.social @ams-sls-stac.bsky.social

Today's FORTRAN tip. When editing IF statements, make sure that you don't add "THEN" to what is actually a *logical* IF statement with a continuation "&", so that it *looks* like it should be a standard block IF (i.e. IF-THEN-ENDIF). Confused the hell out of me, the compiler, *and* an AI agent.

Want to see how smoke affects temperatures without seeing any temperatures? Away from the thicker smoke, enough sun came through to warm up the ground to create cumulus clouds (and even storms). But areas with thicker smoke weren't as warm, and so those puffy clouds didn't form.

It's like dusk in Albany right now with a very thick layer of smoke blocking out the sun and an orange tint to the sky. Approaching the same feel as June 2023. Smells like campfire outside.

Two years from today Dragonfly will be sitting atop a rocket at the cape. With any luck weather will be green, the go no go poll will be all go and we will be on our way to Titan.

The ongoing MCS in IL is quite a bit more robust and intense than previous CAM depictions. At this point I think it is likely to pay a much bigger role in today's severe potential than I had thought yesterday, especially in IN where there may not be enough time to recover ahead of the second round.

The severe wx setup in the Midwest for Wednesday is one of the more impressive I have seen in a long time, with a springlike system mixing with summertime heat and instability. PTC1 also is a big flash flood threat for The Gulf region, particularly from SE TX up into MS. tinyurl.com/bdekjztt

Forecast soundings along warm front in IL and IN tomorrow are insane. Don't recall the last time I've seen > 100 kts of 0-6 km shear with an unstable thermo profile (below is from NAM 3km, but HRRR is similar). Multiple CAMs showing intense supercells training along or just north of the warm front.

A few unprocessed photos from our chase yesterday in northwest IN. Not my best. Distance and lighting were problematic, and was dealing with a fogged up lens at times. It was tough keeping up with the storm. But it was a good chase nonetheless.

We are doing teamwork training in our SPOTTR class today, but privately I’m wondering why we just can’t have the students watch the training videos online by themselves…

Wake low... what happens when you fall out of bed in the morning -- Bob Schlesinger. Also an interesting feature of many MCS an example signature of which can be seen in my home weather station's pressure and wind time series:

Testing. Does everyone here see my handle the same as before? I noticed just now on my profile page that it had “Invalid handle”. I went into the settings and set it to my original handle and it seems fine now… weird.
