Retired NYC teacher. NC Democrat. Anti-fascist. Angry old man.

A really weird irony about the "authenticity" debate wrt rural volk vs cosmopolitan elites is that the actual culture of rural red state America in the 2020s is not actually authentic in any meaningful way?

If we had journalism instead of access journalism, someone would have asked Jeffries: * Who called the meeting, you or Jared? * What was the topic of the meeting? * What was decided at that meeting? * Jared is not an official member of the government, so in what capacity did you meet with him?

NPR cheerfully announced an upcoming discussion of "what tech billionaires want for our democracy." So many layers of fucked-uppery about that sentence I don't know where to start.

Contemptible, indefensible both-sidesing by @ezraklein.bsky.social: “Twitter was, and X is, as happy to be a slingshot for the great replacement theory or anti-Semitism or Islamophobia as for calls to defund the police or abolish ICE.” www.nytimes.com/2026/08/23/o... seriously wtf

Opinion | Twitter Broke the Left. X Will Break the Right.

To explain why Jeffries met with Jared Kushner, instead of Jeffries making plans to investigate and imprison Kushner in a truth and reconciliation process, please read this profile. Jeffries is a fundraiser not a fighter

As the leader of the minority party in the House of Representatives, a fundamentally majoritarian institution, Hakeem Jeffries has little ability to get anything done. Can he help the Democrats get back into the majority? newyorkermag.visitlink.me/-zeVmE

the other thing is that most of the DSA program would be net money positive up to like the top decile. my federal taxes would probably go up 50% under Medicare for all but zeroing out healthcare costs would more than compensate

the average well-off DSA organizer is basically organizing to pay higher taxes the rest of their life and in a society where that level of selflessness is pretty rare I don't think anyone should be giving them shit for it

In a few years when the US is alone in a China-dominated world, Americans who don't follow the news will wonder how we lost our allies. The answer will be that Republican politicians didn't think strategically at all. They just wanted to get re-elected, so they slavishly obeyed a deranged criminal.

The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.
