I do think the underlying thing is that Arday was useful for making the case that "they are hiring unqualified black academics, see!" In the same way he had been useful for Cambridge announcing "we hire ANY black academics, see!" and ultimately, there's no space in those stories for a person.

worth saying this isn't just a British press problem, for some reason Arday was also written about extensively in mainstream national publications in the US and in France, among others, we really do have an entirely fucked up global media ecosystem

Jason Arday’s death is an absolute stain on this country. I feel devastated for him, his family and for people of colour in this country. There’s too much to say about it but there are human consequences to the culture war. When a person becomes the culture war. He was failed.

I interviewed Andy Burnham in December about his rough sleeping target. He said he hadn’t been able to end it in GM because the Govt made it impossible. His argument will now be he has the levers to ensure a bed every night across the UK. A big pledge.

To end rough sleeping you need to fund domestic violence shelters, mental health services, drug and alcohol rehabilitation programmes, let people seeking asylum work, and increase welfare spending.

This is first time I’ve heard the govt making the Labour argument for controlling immigration. Mahmood argues that controlling our borders is good for race relations, because uncontrolled immigration is feeding far right rhetoric and tensions. Expect to hear a lot more of that.

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.

Have a bee in my bonnet because it's a stark reminder that for some people this is just a debate. It's not a debate, it's existential for people of colour, women, the LGBT+ disabled community etc. It's shocking how many people cannot put this fight before everything else. Surrounded by it.
