There are times in this profession where you choose between a contemplative silence, or resolving that it’s cowardly. So I want to say RIP to Jason Arday. The feeding frenzy around this story was too great. The glee, the sense that they got their man. There was just no end in sight. It’s unbearable

I do think the underlying thing is that Arday was useful for making the case that "they are hiring unqualified black academics, see!" In the same way he had been useful for Cambridge announcing "we hire ANY black academics, see!" and ultimately, there's no space in those stories for a person.
worth saying this isn't just a British press problem, for some reason Arday was also written about extensively in mainstream national publications in the US and in France, among others, we really do have an entirely fucked up global media ecosystem
Jason Arday’s death is an absolute stain on this country. I feel devastated for him, his family and for people of colour in this country. There’s too much to say about it but there are human consequences to the culture war. When a person becomes the culture war. He was failed.
THIS. Ever since Gordon Brown's 'bigoted woman' it has been a totally untouchable axiom that concerns about immigration are well founded and unchallengeable. If we had a media and/ or political climate where we were able to challenge these views we might be in a better place.
I do not understand how there is such little pushback against a worldview that has radicalised white English men to riot in the streets and the state to commit institutional violence against all migrants, so little condemnation of an attitude fundamentally at odds with basic human decency

If this wasn't so deeply concerning and tragic, it would be quite funny. Talk about irrelevant policy!
Really? Is that it? If this is all that’s come from COBR, it’s pitifully inadequate. As crisis deepens, it beggars belief that there aren’t eg plans to increase resources for the fire service, support for farmers, max workplace temperature, funded community cool spaces & obvs ban on new fossil fuels
Andy Burnham saying the resolution to the prison crisis is deportation of foreign offenders is misguided. Prisons are not full because of FNOs. This feeds a hostile/racist narrative. Socio-economics more important factor that visa or nationality. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

1/4 If Labour is serious about stopping the authoritarian right, it must rebuild trust by breaking with the very culture that feeds public cynicism. If we fail to change course, the winners will not be the public, but the billionaires.
Don't think we've utilised how much the British public *hated* how football felt in USA style. Imagine how they will feel if the politics is also Americanised. Farage/Reform have made very clear their desire to implement USA style policies. The public should be forced to think about this more.

I interviewed Andy Burnham in December about his rough sleeping target. He said he hadn’t been able to end it in GM because the Govt made it impossible. His argument will now be he has the levers to ensure a bed every night across the UK. A big pledge.
To end rough sleeping you need to fund domestic violence shelters, mental health services, drug and alcohol rehabilitation programmes, let people seeking asylum work, and increase welfare spending.
Given Burnham's priorities - please see our explainer below on how migrants are made homeless by the immigration system itself. Looking forward to working with the new govt. on this.
In his first speech as Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged to end rough sleeping in this country. If he wants to end rough sleeping, he must scrap the hostile immigration rules that push people onto the streets. Here's why 👇
Amazing that Andy Burnham is prioritising ending rough sleeping. The rise in homelessness is inextricably linked to cost of living crisis but also to the immigration system. I hope organisations like @praxisprojects.bsky.social can meet with new cabinet to discuss ending migrant rough sleeping.
Horrific. I hope their affiliations are published.

Labour, the party of the "working class", will force the working class into destitution through repayments resulting from getting a job.

Labour will try to tax everyone except tax billionaires.
This is a Refugee Tax. It was originally proposed by the Tories, and the only reason asylum seekers could be claimed to 'owe' any money is because they are banned from working. Another cruel Labour policy - that must be reversed on day one by Andy Burnham. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
This is a far right argument which blames racial hatred on immigrants instead of racists.
This is first time I’ve heard the govt making the Labour argument for controlling immigration. Mahmood argues that controlling our borders is good for race relations, because uncontrolled immigration is feeding far right rhetoric and tensions. Expect to hear a lot more of that.
New immigration bill put forward before leadership election (insane), policies not in Lab manifesto (insane), focused on copying USA model of immigration raids and arrests (insane), deporting RECOGNISED refugees (insane) still trying to out Reform-reform (insane). Feel free to quote me on that x
Thinking of @praxisprojects.bsky.social service users who live in unsuitable housing, struggle with destitution and poverty, who are at risk of homelessness or rough sleeping. Extreme temperatures are unmanageable in these conditions and it's dangerous/scary. Migrant justice is climate justice.
Yet more evidence that the slogan politics of smash the gangs is exactly that - just a slogan. It doesn't stop irregular crossings, it just makes them more dangerous. To prevent further loss of life in the Channel, the next Prime Minister must open safe routes now. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Reform have now lost six by-elections in a row in England, Scotland and Wales. Their national poll rating is 26% – below Labour in 1983 – and Farage’s approval rating is -37. They’re very far from the voice of the people and need to stop being treated as such.
Have a bee in my bonnet because it's a stark reminder that for some people this is just a debate. It's not a debate, it's existential for people of colour, women, the LGBT+ disabled community etc. It's shocking how many people cannot put this fight before everything else. Surrounded by it.
This country is absolutely mad. The legitimisation of far-right actors is unhinged. He should be banned from literally everything if not in prison.
