Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

I've spent a lot of years studying a lot of collapses, and the truth of the matter is that they're always mundane: mild climatic shifts that reduce crop yields, a dumbass in power who makes some terrible decisions, neglecting things that obviously matter but the will to fix them can't be summoned.

Everytime you think the writers have well and truly jumped the shark, they find another twist. The new Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has published a case report on…. wait for it…. Leopards eating faces #ISYN www.joms.org/article/S027...

NEW: Flock is offering employees "generous" buyouts as communities across the US push back against the surveillance camera network, @wired.com has learned. @peard33.bsky.social and @dmehro.bsky.social with the scoop: www.wired.com/story/flock-...

Tallinn, who led Anthropic's series A, funds METR, the "auditing institute" people took seriously 🙄 After criticism that METR was laughably NOT independent, Anthropic announces they'll pay Accenture to "audit" Accenture had acquired Tallinn firm which will be doing the "auditing" Full circle 🙄

Andrea Lathrop@cabernet.bsky.social · 2mo ago

I cannot repeat this enough. I'm seeing "haha, starched shirt consultants" takes on the Anthropic announcement of the Accenture embed, BUT Accenture acquired 'Faculty' in January, which originated as 'ASI Data Science' founded with financial backing from Jaan Tallinn. Just as like-minded as METR.

Globally, abortion law has moved in a progressive direction over the past three decades. More than 60 countries and territories have liberalised their abortion laws, while only four have restricted them - United States, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Poland.

Paying freelance writers and artists fair rates from the jump was never a question in a collective of current and former freelancers. No 'we can only pay $250 because we're new and anyway it's ~ exposure ~' at The Flytrap. We pay a minimum of $600 for art and $.50 a word for writers.

also. the thing people hate is not ‘the technology’ it is the tech industry. they hate move fast and break things. they hate having everything they say tracked and processed while companies do whatever they want. they hate every single ideological value that animates silicon valley
