"I can't really convince you of my good intentions," he admitted. "I don't know how I could prove that. I...didn't have much of a plan beyond coming here." He wrapped a hand around the back of his neck. "I just wanted to invite you to meet me for lunch on your break. On me. I was hoping you'd be willing to hear me out before walking away for good."

"Why do you care so much?" I asked, scrutinizing him. Most guys wouldn't go this far out of their way to help a buddy. It was like he was personally invested, somehow.

Nico frowned. "He's my best friend. I care because I fucked up here and blew up a situation I didn't even know existed. I just...want him to be happy," he finished lamely.

Watching his face as he talked about Max, it clicked. "You like him, don't you?" Now that I realized, it was obvious.

The weight of Silas’s two fingers on top of his head was nice. It felt comforting. Chicory was seized by the desire to wrap his arms around the fingers and squeeze Silas back. Chicory had never had a friend like Silas, and he wanted to show that he cared for him. But Silas would likely think that was strange. Wouldn’t he? Well, Chicory was about to find out.
With a little huff, Chicory lifted his arms and wrapped them around Silas’s fingers. Silas’s eyes widened, shock blooming on his face. It turned into delighted surprise as Chicory applied pressure. The human looked absolutely tickled. As Chicory let go and ducked away from Silas, the man couldn’t stop grinning.
“You hugged me back.” Silas looked as pleased as a honeybee coated in pollen.

I followed Mary's instructions to get to her. I had to stop at a town and buy supplies and a few tanks of water. And I had to walk for about a day until I reached the ridge where she said she'd meet me. I stood there for a while then I saw her standing stock-still, staring with dark eyes as I had seen her that day she first started to torture me.
I understood that this was no prank. She was the queen now and I was her subject. We may or may not recommence our familiar relationship but I was to understand the boundary. Even though I had plucked her from the verge of defeat and destroyed her enemies, I was just the subject. I wondered if I should bow or kneel.
“No,” she said, reading or guessing my thoughts, “you don't need to kneel. In fact for anyone who needs to kneel before me …”
She smiled.
