Signal is now warning that it could exit Canada over Bill C-22. The government has called Signal, Apple, Meta, US Congress, and cybersecurity experts all wrong. But this isn't a bluff. Canadians will lose access to secure services if the bill passes as is.
Bill C-22’s Groundhog Day: Why the Government’s Dismissal of Signal, Apple and the U.S. Congress Concerns Runs Back the Disastrous Online News Act Playbook - Michael Geist
Secure messaging service Signal yesterday became the latest company to warn that Bill C-22, the lawful access bill, could force it to leave the Canadian market rather than comply with provisions it…

This is like a crypto nerd layer cake of fun. Trail of Bits beat Google's quantum algorithm but actually they didn't, they just broke the zero knowledge proof of efficiency, and actually Google's algorithm is efficient, which they can now prove because they fixed the verifier of said proof. 🤯
Two weeks ago, Google published a paper proving in zero-knowledge that they had an efficient implementation of Shor's algorithm. Today, Trail of Bits can prove that we have an even better implementation which beats Google's on all metrics! 🫢 blog.trailofbits.com/2026/04/17/w...

yes you fucking morons free preschool for everyone or it becomes just "free preschool for the poors" and then you call them leeches and ask for tax breaks when really we want free preschool for everyone because we want smart well adjusted kids why is this so hard? www.nytimes.com/2026/03/31/n...
If you've ever wanted to "slugify" ugly filenames so they're easy to work with from the shell, I've got the tool for you: github.com/vmunix/slugr $ slugr "App Installer (x64) v2.1.0.tar.gz" app-installer-x64-v2.1.0.tar.gz Rust/syscalls, no shell escapes. 280 test suite. Feedback welcome!

I think about this Hunter Thompson quote a lot these days, "The world is not mad, as I thought, but sane in the cheapest kind of way." from a letter to Daryl Murphy, 1962
I’ve hoped for a spiritual successor to HyperCard (composable, shareable, remixable) for decades. The decentralized infrastructure behind Web Tiles is complex by comparison, but if an authoring layer that makes it all click instantly, the way HyperCard did, is possible? It would be so cool. :)

Hot off the internets — there's a brand new kid on the DASL block: Web Tiles! It's still early days, some key features are missing, and there are some rough edges, but you can publish tiles to AT and play with the idea! webtil.es
Have been working with some C++23 coroutine code lately, which has been.. fun? Humbling? Scary? Yes. Pretty quickly ran into a class of bug that is described as a "MVC", but not the MVC you're thinking of! Most Vexing Capture. Field notes here: www.vmunix.com/posts/vexing...
The Most Vexing Capture, in the Wild
A coroutine race condition investigation led us straight into the MVC. A war story.

I'm trying doom emacs. I'm not hating it. I don't know what this means.
💥 I did a drawing that breaks down Transformers in AI Spent a good amount of time on this one, breaking down concepts in a way that someone new to the subject could come away with basic high-level understanding. I hope it's useful!
Did my first code review / refactor using superpowers by @s.ly tonight. By far, FAR, the best out of the box experience with a claude code plugin. Amazing, thank you sir!

I used Claude Code to reverse-engineer the Claude macOS Electron app and had Cowork dig around in its own environment - now I've got a good idea of how the sandbox works It's an Ubuntu VM using Apple's Virtualization framework, details here: gist.github.com/simonw/35732...

Amazing progress! Clearly accelerating, too. I never thought I'd leave a vim editor, but I now frequent Helix and Zed and it's been both fun and productive!
Happy New Year from the Zed team! 🎉 We’re excited to be back after the holiday break, but before we put 2025 in the rearview mirror, we wanted to share how Zed progressed this past year. Thank you for all the feedback and contributions to Zed. ❤️ zed.dev/2025
I've seen this passed around a bunch and skimmed it and nodded in agreement (because obviously the new mac OS interface design is bad), but I didn't actually sit down and read the whole thing until just now. God, it's just brutal. tonsky.me/blog/tahoe-i...

Last year I wrote about how strange it is that Apple rates Grok as appropriate for kids 12+ in the App Store. I checked this morning in the wake of Grok's CSAM/nudification scandals and can report that ... Apple now rates Grok as appropriate for kids 13+.

AI image generation is becoming scary good. It's only going to get better. I'm increasingly certain we need strong cryptographic image provenance. Including at the hardware level. And we should start digitally authenticating and signing real photos that make up the historical record.
I always appreciate @simonwillison.net writeups on his adventures with LLMs, so as I explored a curiosity of my own (where do LLM generated DSP algos come from, exactly?) I kept notes. Delightfully, "same as everyone, a 1998 usenet post", but also more than that. www.vmunix.com/posts/anatom...
Anatomy of an LLM-Generated Biquad EQ
Where did my EQ implementation come from? Everywhere. And nowhere. It's complicated.

Took @joanwestenberg.com's advice of "Build something that will never scale, never be monetized, never attract users" to heart and built myself a VST plugin that let's me write DSP audio effects in Glicol and apply them to an instrument in real-time in Ableton. www.vmunix.com/posts/glicol...
GlicolVerb - The Hard Part Was The UI
I built a live-music-coding effects type VST in Rust. The audio DSP was easy. The text input was not.

I installed @netnewswire.com after a 10+ year hiatus and it somehow had all my old feeds. Almost all were still active. Incredible. Excellent writing across them all, without exception. Even more incredible. I'm 3hrs into reading sites I haven't regularly read in a decade and it's glorious.
