Republican Senators are voting to confirm Trump’s lawyer to be AG when it just came out that Capital One shut down Trump’s accounts under suspicion of money laundering and Trump wants exemption from being investigated for tax fraud. THESE PEOPLE ARE CRIMINALS.
Imagine starting the dumbest war and then getting totally preoccupied with your bungled pool project.
This is banana republic stuff - we all know that, right?
FLAG: Trump gets to keep tax immunity for himself, his sons, and the Trump Organization under the new 'deal' struck by Todd Blanche. The new order also reaffirms that Trump won't have to pay any taxes he might have owed the IRS.
My column this week. To have any chance of winning this November, Alabama Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones has to draw a contrast with the GOP and try to break from the state's usual political patterns. His speech last week did both.
Doug Jones' agenda is a reminder: Alabama Democrats have to be bold | Alabama Reflector
Conservatives play the music in Alabama politics. They set the tempo, call out the steps and judge the dancers. So the ball is always the same. The right-wingers waltz with large business; do a bit of...

There is a certain level of obtuseness in (some) "AI" apologists when they flounce up to point out what "AI" is good for in science, etc, while eliding the fact that almost none of that use is driving the current market capitalization, environmental degradation and resource hogging of the field
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
I've written a longer piece on the book that's been pulled due to "AI" use allegations, what that means particularly for newer authors, and what, if anything writers can do in the "AI" era to prove their work is their own: whatever.scalzi.com/2026/07/31/a...
Another Reason Not to Use “AI” For Your Writing
Back in February I did a long post about “AI” and why I wouldn’t use it for my own writing, and one of the reasons I gave was “the fact that ‘AI’-generated text …

When trans folks point out the cowardice of institutions complying with anti-trans bigotry, we're often hit with "but what do you expect them to do?" Well, this. Say "no." Refuse. Defy. Grow a goddamn spine.
In February, USA Rugby banned trans women from all levels of one of the world’s most inclusive sports. What happened next was telling. Across the country, teams refused to comply. The story of the Baltimore Ferals, who are pushing back: www.thebanner.com/sports/rugby...

Just moved all my notes from an app I’d used for 10 years to Amplenote. #Experiments #SavingMoneyMaybe
Even if these commonly advanced talking points were true as general statements (yes, I know debt is a problem for lots of folks, & some folks with degrees don't get jobs) no one, in either party, wants to talk about the actual solution to this & all the other real & imagined higher ed problems:
"College is unaffordable" Fund. The. Damn. Public. Universities. Like. We. Used. To.
Wish I could share an example of an AI-generated paper we receive all the time because they are *weird*. Mechanical manucripts that tick the boxes as academic content but really contribute nothing to knowledge. If AI has benefits for research, we're not seeing it. Just seeing shoddy autoscholarship.
The anatomy of an AI-supported academic article is becoming more apparent. I desk reviewed ~70 manuscripts this week for our journal. Reckon 20ish had significant AI assistance. On top of hundreds of others recently I'm starting to see patterns. Are other editors are seeing the same or similar? 1/
So the hubs has started reading "Worse on Purpose" articles and this one is WELL worth reading if you do any cooking at all. @moviessilently.bsky.social @mrsa2003.bsky.social #Cookware

There's one man who tried to commit election fraud in the State of Georgia in that 2020 election, and it was Donald Trump.
Nobody disputes that having access to a car in a car-dominated society is good. It gives one access to jobs, healthcare, food, education, social opportunities and more. All we're asking is for people to go one step deeper and ask why access to such basic rights requires buying and operating a car.
I grew up in Jackson Heights in Queens and we still had a car, and our lives got measurably better when we did.
Last week I shared my fact checking process on IG and TikTok. I got comments from folks letting me know that ChatGPT could help make the process faster. I explained: (1) my book contract prohibits the use of LLMs and (2) I’m morally opposed to the use of LLMs. Or as I call them, plagiarism bots.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing half the population that the "manly" way to get around is on a giant rolling couch controlled by gently depressing your toe.

In a sane world (an alt reality) today's dissents would sufficient to warrant Thomas, Gorsuch and Alito's impeachment and removal from office. If you defy the plain words, meaning, intent, history, precedent of a black letter constitutional injunction u are abusing your power and should be removed.
I’m mad about today. I’m mad that justices can’t do the bare minimum to uphold the Constitution. I’m mad that the law and our history, which I have dedicated so much of my life to, is an inconvenience than an inheritance to many. I’m mad that the academy, which I love, rewards and enables it.
Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Non binary people are non binary. Everyone has the right to be themselves. Everyone deserves a political and judicial system that respects and protects these rights. We need to make that happen.
