I'm working on my slides for tomorrow's AI-and-misinformation talk in Narragansett, and I'm going to open with what I'm calling "The Parable of the Ferry Cat."

A slide showing an AI-generated image of a supposed cat on a Ferry in Rhode Island. The accompanying text -- from the Facebook post in "Life in Rhode Island" in June 2026 -- says, in part "A ginger cat named Suleyman has been riding the same Rhode Island Ferry route for nearly four years, and the ferry crew finally decided he deserved a seat of his own."A slide featuring 8 nearly-identical AI-generated images that purport to depict a cute "ferry cat" in various locales, including Galveston, TX; New York City; Connecticut; and Minnesota.A snopes headline from June 4, 2026 that reads "Fact Check
Story about cat named Marty with designated seat on daily ferry commute should give you pause
Readers asked us to investigate. We'd like to apologize for being killjoys."

The slide features the pull quote from the Snopes article: "“After investigating, we regret to inform readers that the image is fake. It was generated using artificial intelligence tools…[W]e found posts claiming that Marty had been riding ferries in Maui, Hawaii; Galveston, Texas; Savannah, Georgia; Mobile, Alabama; Mackinac Island, Michigan; Boston; and Apache Junction, Arizona. (That last one was particularly egregious: There is no river in Apache Junction.)

The strategy at play here is pretty common: People post a variety of AI slop in an attempt to make money from advertising revenue or from the social media platforms. The more posts, the better, and introducing slight differences between them allows the poster to target specific demographics of people.”

I really do hate talking about primaries in places I haven’t visited let alone lived on main but now that we’re at the day of reckoning in MI- I never saw a single line from stevens that seemed remotely appealing to anyone from this time and planet, unless they had evil tendencies.

Kinda funny to realize nearly four years later there's a term for what the therapist deployed during my greatest MH crisis, also clarifies why that worked after "talking it out" had had diminishing returns in the past

TODAY: @katewagner.wehwalt.net on the life-changing power of skills-based therapy. "A lot of this stuff has saved my life and the thing it’s saved my life from is not capitalism, or any other form of adversity, but myself." flaminghydra.com/issue-620/?a...

Love seeing bad faith shitheads relitigating the pandemic, which I wrote about on a near daily basis for a year and a half until I had 360,000 words that are too raw to revisit for more than a couple paragraphs at a time

It's grim how Wannabe Executive Brain has so thoroughly poisoned baseball discourse that the Red Sox feel like they have to make excuses for swapping a bum catcher for an All-Star catcher because they also threw in a bunch of mostly unranked A-ball prospects

Very early in the pandemic, I spent 2 terrible weeks in isolation, unable to breathe or walk across the room. Waiting my temp. to spike. Worrying about my kids. Fighting against dying. In the middle of this covid revisionist, anti-vax bullshit, it was worth saying what that felt like:

Poem titled "Gnawed." The text of the poem reads:

Gnawed

Kalends of April, 2020

I can feel the rat,
dark and angry,
buried
in the furrows of my chest,
trying hard to pull apart
the fiber of my breathing.
Twisting. Writhing.
Clawing
with a feral-hearted hatred
at the bonds that sinew
soul to skin.
I cannot walk across the room without
the rasping of its teeth
along the inside of my ribs,
or speak without it screaming
in the shallows of my breath.
I can only lie beyond
the borders of my life,
checking the thermometer
a hundred times a day
as all the while
I am being
eaten
from the inside out.
