Birds have a thick retina devoid of blood vessels - so how do they ensure sufficient oxygen availability? They don't - neurons rely on glycolysis, metabolizing glucose released from the pecten. Insane new study that includes comparative data on lizards and crocs.🧪 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Oxygen-free metabolism in the bird inner retina supported by the pecten - Nature

While the photoreceptor outer segments in the bird outer retina have access to oxygen, the inner retina operates under chronic anoxia, supported by anaerobic glycolysis in the retinal neurons.

Can we please discuss accessibility at conferences? When organizers and schedules assume that everyone can walk fast and climb stairs, people with mobility issues (visible or invisible) might feel excluded. /

Photo taken at the Neues Museum in Berlin (which luckily has elevators!). It shows lots of stairs both left and right and several floors with people walking up. Some windows at the top.

My lab at Indiana University is searching for a *postdoc* and *technician* to contribute to our work studying the evolution of social behavior using fruit flies as a model system. Details below, feel free to email me with any questions! More info on our research: saltzlab.com

🚨 My lab is hiring at all levels! Interested in animal origins & evolutionary cell biology? I'm recruiting a postdoc, PhD students & a research assistant to study the molecular evolution of cell adhesion using marine invertebrates + comparative genomics. 🔗: clarkelab.com/join/ Please repost!

And here’s another thread about perfection! The world doesn’t actually WANT perfection from you demand for perfection is a cudgel used by people in power to control you, to keep you feeling small, to keep you easy to manipulate Remember that. As they yell at fat generals bsky.app/profile/swil...

I grew up in a highly patriarchal system that stressed perfection & was baffled when men in power (only men were in power) were angry when I met all their expectations instead of proud & how they seemed almost RELIEVED when I was finally gay so they could throw me out until I finally realized:

Hey, if you are actively coughing and sniffing at a conference, WEAR A DAMNED MASK. We need to start having policies at meetings to hand out masks and enforce their wearing to limit infectious disease spread.

Nixon Lab is hoping to recruit a postdoctoral fellow interested in alcohol-microglia and/or alcohol-neural stem cell interactions in recovery from alcohol-induced brain and behavioral damage/dysfunction. Open fellowships on our NIAAA-funded T32! Please spread the word!
