I should be better at this by now...

A tell tale sign that AI companies have no safety expertise is that they promote the idea of "general" safety. There's no such thing, safety is relative to the system, environment, and context and why a catastrophic accident in nuclear is defined differently from one in aviation.

one wonders how they arrived at that “it’s ok to kill or injure 49 people, but 50 is right out” figure.

We already have an AI kill switch: cut power to servers. Really want to talk existential threat? Fine. We humans have many ways to blow things up. Like data centers. Panicky discourse assumes the first priority is protect tech company investments and expand their businesses. But why should it be?

Based upon their documented behavior over the past few years, the tech industry is less afraid of the potential ramifications of Artificial Superintelligence than they are of Lina Khan.

Which of the handful of companies involved in this will abandon their current planned investments because interest rates rose? If they would, how high would their borrowing costs have to go? I think you'd have to raise rates until lenders simply deny them further credit. Incredibly painful

Getting a bit tired of very rich actors and directors saying ‘AI is here we have to learn how to use it’ instead of ‘I am wealthy enough to dedicate myself only to projects which employ talented human beings because anything else is an existential threat to human storytelling’

CAPITAL: We have invented a machine that can cross picket lines PROGRAMMERS: I bet this will give us four day weekends. The left need to get behind this. What else can it do CAPITAL: Psychosis! Deepfakes! Propaganda! Plagerism! Yaml! Todo Apps! PROGRAMMERS: Run those last two past me again

Enjoyed this. As a layperson it was really educational on technical mechanisms of economic fallout, things I wouldn’t think about if not for this intersection. I feel it nicely says “these bits are wrong” without extrapolating to “your diagnosis is off - AI funding is secure - and EZ is an idiot”

NEW @crisesnotes.bsky.social PIECE: In this piece I critique a recent piece from @edzitron.com comparing the AI(LLM) boom to the "Subprime" Mortgage Crisis (and implicitly the GFC of 2007-2009). The ? is:"How big of a macrofinancial threat is the AI(LLM) Boom?" www.crisesnotes.com/sigh-no-ed-z...

If we understand fascism as the deliberate attempt by capital to destroy labor while annihilating dissenting ideas prevalent in art and culture, we can view AI and LLMs as the existential threat to democracy that it is

Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences

i would have rather america accelerated global electrification by building an unparalleled domestic green manufacturing industry but i'll take petrostate gangsterism scaring everyone into going green if that's the only option on the table

This is another reason why the only path forward is for Dems to bite the bullet and implement proportional representation via increasing the size of the House and mandating single multi-member districts. You can't have a constitutional democracy in a two-party system if one party is authoritarian.

I've said this before, but the pervasive rot of bigotry and ineptitude in the GOP is a generational problem for the party. If we can manage to wrest our democracy back in any sort of serious way it's going to take them decades to rebuild.

Anti-Black racism has created "fact resistant Americans." I said what I said about people that complained that right-wing news or social media had *suddenly* brainwashed their parents into refusing to mask or get vaccinated. No. Nothing was sudden. They cooked their own brains slowly over decades

If your parents get most of their news from right-wing news TV over the past 30 years, then they were more likely to believe that: * The election was stolen * Covid was a hoax " Ivermectin works * Vaccines don't * Portland was burned to the ground during BLM marches * Portland is a war zone today

A way to be an ally to Jews is to relentlessly point out that there are more Christian Zionists in the US alone then there are Jews in the entire world (many of whom are not even Zionists). The conversation about Zionism should be dominated by that rather than laying all blame at the feet of Jews.

It remains very weird to me that in a world of actually useful technology -- photovoltaic power generation, mRNA vaccines, maglev trains, smart phones, etc -- the tech sector has gone so all-in on bullshit generators and plagiarism machines.
