Video game fact! Though there are hundreds of video games of many genres and styles, there are only three possible “sizes” a video game can come in. Those sizes are: “Small” (16.00 MB) “Medium” (374.26 MB) “Large” (154.44 GB)
Okay, it's time for a Moist Owlette™ timeline cleanse. Today's moist owlette is "Owlfredo" at the Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Massachusetts. She's an Eastern screech owl (Megascops asio) & Animal Ambassador with a big personality. (📷: @zoonewengland.bsky.social via IG)
Insomniac will likely launch 4 games this generation in the gap between Naughty Dog's last and next release, and all I can think about is a podcast episode where Tim Schafer interviewed Ted Price (before he left Insomniac) and Ted talking about how much work they did to reduce crunch at Insomniac.
The sheer scale of a billion dollars can be hard to understand. Let me put it in perspective for you. You would have to earn a dollar a day for a billion days straight to have that much money.
This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up. I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.
Jesus, can you hear me? Good, the comms are working. Now, you're gonna need to run if you want to evade those Roman soldiers. Hold down A to sprint. Go ahead and try it. ... Good work! You just might be the savior yet. Now pick up that AR-15 and let's do some target practice.
My "No Graphics API" blog post is live! Please repost :) www.sebastianaaltonen.com/blog/no-grap... I spend 1.5 years doing this. Full rewrite last summer and another partial rewrite last month. As Hemingway said: "First draft of everything is always shit".

You feeling okay, man? I’ve noticed you developing some darker themes that contrast with the whimsy of your earlier installments.
YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT! I HAVE WRITTEN A NEW ARTICLE! this one's a bit weird; rather than doing my usual "trying to organize my thoughts and building a winding case that builds on itself," I decided to show you what my EARLY article creation process looks like: docseuss.medium.com/some-loosely...
some loosely organized thoughts about dialogue sysin games

I write middle-grade whodunnits, so you might want to dismiss my opinion out of hand. But I think cosy games/crime sometimes miss the fact that blankets are only cosy when it's cold outside. A world without conflict / a story without stakes isn't cosy, it's just safe.
We need to talk about the cozyfication of games because it’s a serious disease, possibly as bad as the edgyfication of the 90s and the grittyfication of the 00s.
Much like "crab", industrial music is constantly re-evolving from first principles basically anywhere where there's a bunch of metal and plastic laying about
Here's a mini fireworks show I found in the slow motion details of a marine flare. I set this up to capture smoke patterns, but was delighted to find that what look like sparks to the naked eye are tiny perfect fireballs streaking through the sky when seen in close-up at 42x slower than real-time.
A government ban on Hungary’s Pride parade backfired Saturday as over 100,000 people marched through Budapest, far more than usual PM Viktor Orban warned people to stay away, threatening “clear legal consequences.” But the warnings only turned a modest event into a mass rally against his government
i know it's just advertisement but it still pisses me off when tech CEOs claim AGI will solve humanity's problems with its vast intelligence. for a lot of problems we already know the solutions, what prevents them being solved is not a lack of intelligence, but that the solutions are unprofitable
cool new development, the cat has started lying like this. Stupid little loaf. I gasp every time
It's a weird world where the shittier a piece of software looks, the more I trust it. The fancy looking ones? They're going to steal my data or extort me in pricing or just not work. Crappy looking tools made by some random dude? This shit is going to get the job done and do nothing else.
