lmao it’s the same in NYC as in DC. the wealthy don’t want their taxes to go up so they’ll say a lot of nonsense meant to sound adult and serious in order to justify cutting public services.
Opposing a policy that would increase city revenue because the city doesn't have enough revenue, chef's kiss.
If three NYers were shot up by strangers that got away it would be on CNN and NYT/WSJ above fold. If three subway riders died after being pushed on 🚇tracks by strangers it would be on CNN and NYT/WSJ above fold. Three NYers were killed by hit-run drivers and nary a peep?
Hit-and-run drivers killed three New York City cyclists in three separate crashes this week, with the latest victim a 40-year-old Brooklyn man, NYPD said. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/08/21/h...
Whenever I post about this kind of thing, often somebody will reply “they are trying to get you used to it” No we are all mad as hell all the time, they are trying to get YOU used to it
Feel free to be upset by the costs of this, but if it’s not a familiar experience, please also think about how you would feel if you saw military patrols in your neighborhood when you walked your dog, went to the store, went out for the evening, etc.
The Pentagon’s deployment of National Guard troops to D.C. is set to cost an additional $1.4 billion through the end of the Trump administration, according to information reviewed by The Post. The estimate encompasses October 2026 through January 2029.
The goal now is just to discipline labor and crush any popular anticapitalist movement. They’ve achieved a level of wealth that makes profit and loss pure abstraction, now they’re just focused on social control. Fighting taxes isn’t about wealth, it’s about starving the state of resources
The point of all this isn't to turn a profit or come out ahead. The point is to establish that capital can never be invaded, that wealth belongs exclusively in private hands and its expenditure decided by private interests, that the state and its people have no right to it or say in its use.
This is a disaster created by the GOP. It's important to identify the culprits. It was directly created by them as POLICY. They clearly articulated that this was what they hoped to accomplish. gothamist.com/news/food-pa...
Food pantries see long summer lines as New Yorkers lose SNAP benefits in Trump overhaul
They say they have enough food for now but worry they’ll run out of supplies once more New Yorkers begin losing their SNAP benefits.

it has not even been seven days since the last time ICE agents killed someone, then claimed without evidence that the person had "weaponized" their car, and also were not wearing body cameras

I don't think DC residents are talking about this enough: Mayor Bowser and Council raided the tax money employers pay to support paid leave. That money should support workers; its not for patching budget holes elsewhere. dc.citycast.fm/news/dc-paid...

This is a really moving and thoughtful interview
Man in viral D.C. Metro photo says he was ‘terrified’ as masked white nationalists surrounded him
Roswell Encina, a gay Filipino American civic leader, said the Fourth of July encounter with Patriot Front was frightening and impossible to separate from American history.

“In his Instagram post, Encina thanked Gomez, the Getty photographer, whose presence on the train he said was ‘quietly reassuring.’ In the interview, he said seeing a photographer there gave him some comfort because someone was documenting what was happening.”
America keeps trying to get me to go to her birthday party and I’m like no girl u need to go to the hospital
700k+ people of DC are forced into role as ground-zero for Trump's wanton destructiveness. Again: We pay *more*, per capita, in federal taxes than any other Americans. For real. Greatest tax burden. Zero representation. Statehood for DC needs to be #1 on Dem agenda.
They're sending a wave of aircraft ever ten minutes for eight hours. This is some airborne North Korea-level shit.
Minnesota people: many of them are OUR guardsmen, sent by OUR governor. It’s disgusting
I've learned that most folks are not aware that there are 5000 National Guard troops wandering around DC (almost entirely in the central neighborhoods and metro stations) who are fully armed and have been "deputized" with arrest powers.
This sort of thing makes clear there are no fiscal problems here, only political ones.
There was also no action on @brianneknadeau.bsky.social's proposed wealth proceeds tax on households making more than $500k a year. It's unclear if it will come up before a final budget vote on June 23, but even if it doesn't, she wants it to be part of the conversation moving forward.
A characteristically rancid take from WaPo editorial board on the proposed Wealth Proceeds Tax for DC. Are educated and married people not to pay taxes on passive income? So what about people who are single or don't have college degrees?

Years of top-down investments have failed to create promised widespread benefits. The gap between the wealthiest and poorest DC residents continues unabated, many Black residents have been displaced, and DC has made no progress on chronic racial economic disparities.
If you like what happened in Virginia, you’re gonna love DC statehood
Actually we should just give citizenship to every undocumented person in the United States who wants it. Walking over an imaginary line isn't some great moral atrocity. Making people live in the shadows as a permanent underclass absolutely IS.
Over 40k people die a year due to cars in the US and that isn't even factoring in environmental damages. Instead of acknowledging the harm that cars cause to the populace cyclists continue to get demonized by people who can't even conceive of an infrastructure not centered around cars.
Wild what you can get away with in articles about cycling. This is objectively false! A city with less driving and more biking is far safer for pedestrians. Hate cyclists all you want but that’s an empirical fact
Last year, DC ended dental coverage for residents insured through the Health Care Alliance and Basic Health Plans. 19 years ago a 12-year-old Maryland boy died because he didn't have access to dental care. It doesn't have to be this way. www.washingtonpost.com/archive/loca...

The way so many people on here casually refer to any liberal woman over 35 as a "wine mom" is gross
Bovino advanced all the way to within eyesight of Paisley Park, but his supply lines were stretched too thin and ultimately his frozen troops were encircled by Will Stancil and wine moms with whistles
It would be nice to have a Council chair who didn't always condescend to advocates who want DC residents to have their basic needs met. We understand that the fiscal situation is dire. The question is, are you going to do a single thing about it? www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
This is tremendous. Take the time to watch it.
Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”
something that always makes me cry instantly: singing at protests.
In the #TwinCities #Minneapolis and #StPaul, protesters sing outside hotels that house ICE & Border Patrol: "It's okay to change your mind. Show us your courage. Leave this behind. It's okay to change your mind. And you can join us, you can join us anytime."
