Color me skeptical about Mayor Karen Bass' Metro priorities - a sort of promise-almost-nothing version of Mamdani's fast&free buses. Bass has not made Metro, especially Metro transit riders, a priority for 3.5 years. Yesterday's speech mostly signals continuation of that inaction.

Mayor Karen Bass pledges some transit (and even bike) improvements are her priorities as Metro board chair. The ideas sound somewhat like Mamdani, but the details don't look very promising. la.streetsblog.org/2026/07/23/m...

Today, LA Metro DPS released their security update and it turns out, like people have been observing, there are some fare checks happening. It went from ~4k in March to ~19k in April. Here's that on the graph. It's basically invisible because before 2018, LA Metro used to do ~350k a month.

Today in no cost can happen, only benefit can happen: we often talk about designating more loading zones to reduce double parking, blocking bike lanes, pursue the Shoupean ethic, etc. Under PROWAG, cities are now* unable to designate passenger loading zones without reconstructing the whole sidewalk.

Two young Chinese tourists just asked me for directions on LA Metro and when they showed me their google maps, it had little markers for destinations all over the city that they were visiting on transit. Their LA is a transit city. That's so cool.

Slight updates/downgrades made to westside COG bus lanes. They’re also prepping criteria for evaluation on measure m’s decennial review, noting that revenues are lower than anticipated, which will certainly mean no new projects added, not that that was ever expected.
