Google has begun notifying Android users that Google Assistant will start disappearing from mobile devices on September 4 as part of its transition to Gemini. Access removal starts on September 4 and will roll out over several weeks. Once updated, users will not be able to revert back to GA.
i feel like "open access to the internet, while also being taught to not give out personal information/that there are absolutely dangerous people & things out there" is a good compromise. like not stranger danger but we do gotta teach internet literacy.
this isn't very popular to say, but for me personally, it was good that i had unrestricted internet access when i was a minor. i was aware of what i was doing and enjoyed it. i don't look back on it and go "well that was a mistake", i look back on it and wish i could do it for the first time again
So I looked up the year that the first Chrome version was released, and I am feeling very old.
Not here because it's a left-leaning site, here because I see this as a renewed vision of the internet.
the number of folks who jumped to the worst possible interpretation of toni’s interview clips is quite concerning, too many people have let social media and purity culture just melt their brains… it’s one of the most gratuitous & gross examples of toxic online discourse culture i’ve seen in awhile

so there's been this big Clear Channel digital countdown to the world cup billboard in Oakland for the last six months, except the world cup is over, and they haven't found someone new to buy the billboard space, so right now it just says: "-51 days till all eyes are on the Bay Area!"

I don't really have an objection to the CEO saying Bluesky is open to all; it's kind of his job to do that. But as others have pointed out, the design of the site means it's harder for trolls/bots/chuds *and also* influencers/hypebeasts to get traction. The "bubble" here is actually normal humans.
A reminder to not get your info from 1 minute clips from an hour long interview. The context for this isn't about attracting "you know, viewpoint diversity" but making the app attractive to people seeking things that aren't politics.

my neighborhood 7-11 closed a couple years ago and tried to reopen but couldn’t get the permit approved because there’s a preschool next door and 7-11s sell alcohol (the previous permit was grandfathered in). i saw a fence going up around the lot recently and looked up what was moving in: a gun shop

In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.
