I tweet about science fiction fandom and Ireland and other strange things. Last Worst hope for peace. He/Him

I never realised that Dolly Parton couldn’t have children because of endometriosis. And that she was public about that in the 70’s and 80’s, when there was even more stigma and shame around infertility and menstruation than there is today.

One important principle that risks being lost in polarised debate following Jason Arday’s tragic death is this: intent is not the test for discrimination or institutional racism. The more important Q for any institution is whether its processes, practices and actions produced discriminatory outcomes

Are you around Dublin? Come along to the Dublin 2029 Monthly Meetup! We get together on the second Monday of every month for a chat, a bit of craic, and the chance to meet others from the community. Come join us at Tapped on Nassau St on Monday 10th August from 6pm!

A photo of the Dublin 2029 party at Metropolcon. James is in the foreground smiling and giving a thumbs up to the camera. he is a white man with short white hair and beard, wearing glasses, a blue and purple shirt and a lanyard covered in badges. He is stood at the drinks table which is serving different kinds of whiskeys. Behind him the room is filled with people talking together.

I get that bus drivers have and need breaks. However that I am consistently stuck on Parnell Sq waiting for a driver to come relieve my current driver is a problem. Surely this is not the kind of service that is needed if you want to encourage people out of their cars?

Since early Spider-Man trailers this island and lighthouse really had me confused. Finally got a chance to pause and look at it properly. It IS Roosevelt island, but they have completely changed the northern end of the island (about 3/4 a mile). Different lighthouse & shape of the island.

Still from recent Spider-Man trailer with island in east river.

Watching the latest spider man trailer. There is a very odd image of Roosevelt island where they have changed the northern end of the Island , with a very different shape and a different lighthouse.

Not well enough to march in trans & intersex pride today, but I'm stitching in solidarity, because this household includes, respects, and loves *all* mná. Trans rights are human rights, and my trans sisters deserve respect, love, and the ability to just live their god damn lives.

Supposed to be one of the warmest days in Ireland in recent times. I am not in work, so may retreat to cinema to make use of the A/C. But I also could go and enjoy the outside. I have applied sun cream and have more to top up later.

At some point the State decided it was going to stop building public housing. Nobody ever put that in a manifesto. The Ministers under whom the policy was implemented explicitly denied it was their policy. But it happened. And it has hobbled our society ever since.

It’s worth saying this over and over again so we don’t make mistakes like we’ve made in the past — everyone in the DOJ involved in this must be fired, prosecuted, and if relevant disbarred. You could just quit. People have quit.

CNN: The DOJ has launched a new criminal investigation into one of Trump's enemies, E. Jean Carroll. The source is telling CNN that the investigation now is focused on whether she committed perjury during her two civil lawsuits against the president.

I strongly believe every school system in the US should offer a free meal. The thing is, if only poor folks get food, it becomes a shameful thing that no one with power cares about. If rich folks are in the same system, they'll make sure the system is decent because they don't want crappy stuff.

In Chicago, every public school student gets breakfast and lunch for free. Rich students, poor students, they all benefit. Every student in the city gets at least two meals a day. No one gets shamed for needing food. I will never have kids, but I'm very happy my tax dollars go to this.

I love Eurovision, it's usually one of my favourite nights, but boycotting this year because of Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people. I should have boycotted last year, I wish I had, and I watched in horror as Israel attempted to game the results of the popular vote, so it's done for me now.
