Glad we made it to Bordeaux by taxi last night and are now in the TGV train to Paris!
I was there too - travelling by train, but not that this matters in the bigger scheme of things. This type of conferencing is unsustainable given fuel prices, climate catastrophes and infrastructure breakdowns. And its just one part of the academic business model breaking down.
I was just there, on a day trip after the SASE conference in Bordeaux. Where thousands of academics had gathered (in unbearably hot university buildings). Many (most?) had travelled there by plane. Still thinking that if we keep doing conferences at all, we need much stricter air travel rules.
Reasons to archive your data #15846: you move to a different university and can no longer access the institutional email address to which all "reasonable requests for data" are being referred.

Remarkable how over a decade ago @michaelnielsen.bsky.social pointed the way towards solving long standing issues plaguing science to this day (issues that are all the more relevant in the age of AI mediated science)
This is why @atproto.science is so relevant rn This compilation of essays indicates that scientists are most frustrated by insufficient “community tools and resources... Essential infrastructure for sharing, maintaining and building on existing work and data is also badly underdeveloped." >
We decided to get out. Not sure whether we would have still made it tomorrow. The main road Lacanau-Bordeaux is already closed. #GlobalHeating #Wildfire

Warum dann keine „VersaTiles GmbH"?

To the extent that it’s true, Nordhaus knew that just as well as them. But he considered that economics had nothing to say about extinction and existential risk. And he was an economist, so he did what economists often do, which is work under assumptions where their model can function.
In conclusion, by the 1980s climate scientists knew that the cost of burning fossil fuels was approaching infinity, as it posed an existential threat to human civilization. But economists simply said "no it doesn't" and governments went with the liars who told them what they wanted to hear.

I do think Germany deserves its reputation as a renewable energy champion, mainly because if it wasn't for Germany building heavily subsidised solar in 2004, we probably wouldn't have the cheap solar panels that have enabled so many other solar market booms.
