We made it a mission to see a clouded yellow this year, trying Holkham and Warham Camp with some success but both a challenge, so a surprise to have one yesterday drop right in front of me into the @rafadrm.bsky.social car park!

An amazing day celebrating all things SR-71 at the American Air Museum at IWM Duxford today, meeting the real crews, demonstrating the heat resistant strength of the Blackbird's materials and a bit of friendly competition between the IWM volunteers and the RAF cadets on the reaction test!
We were very pleased to show aviation artist Mark Postlethwaite around the museum recently, as he researched a short film about the specific Defiant that Airfix adopted for their model kit. You can watch Mark's moving tribute to an aircraft and her crew here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xagq...

A wonderful evening at Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve as a birthday treat to see our first ever beavers We watched three beavers for some time, two juveniles and a baby, going about their business and noisily gnawing on trees.

It's 12 minutes of Harry trying to persuade the Hogwarts toilet inspector that he needs to go into the girls toilets to rescue Hermione from a Troll and that he shouldn't have to show them his genitals first.

Whilst we tire of the AI slop filling social media (including from some high-profile museums), it's our pleasure to share this beautiful montage of our museum created by talented work experience student Daisy last week. The art shows some of her favourite objects in the museum, see Alt text.

Not 1, not 2, but 3 purple emperors on the same branch at Foxley Wood this morning. Not surprising as they were all congregating to feed on tree sap, battling with hornets, flies and the odd red admiral. Many thanks to the kind observers who pointed out where to see them.

Today in 1998, “Atomic Audit”—the first and only comprehensive, cumulative accounting of the full costs of US nuclear weapons and weapons-related programs—was published. We conservatively estimated total spending at nearly $5.5 trillion (1996 dollars). It now exceeds $12.1 trillion (2026 dollars).

It's probably time European journalists wrapped their heads around Heat Index (temp + relative humidity). In high humidity, sweating is less efficient, making heat worse, e.g.: Experiencing 35°C in London UK (70% RH) is more dangerous than 50°C in Phoenix Arizona (15% RH)
